Moyle faces tough day at Ellenbrook; set for first 2011 meeting at Perth

by Sheldon Nouchy
Bunbury W.A - On Saturday Jason Moyle (Jason Moyle Racing) headed to Ellenbrook Speedway for the long awaited first round of the 2011-2012 R2C Pro Dirt Late Model Series.  Although it was a tough day result wise, finishing the feature race a couple of laps down, the team came away happy knowing the changes made to the car throughout the event had worked.

"Track conditions proved to be very tricky all night, but we had some great battles with a number of drivers" said Moyle.

Format for the twilight meeting saw the field of 20 drivers receive two heat races, where there would be ten cars per heat, along with the A and B Dashes.

In his first heat Jason would start third, behind 2011 Development Series runner up Nat Muir and Matt Nylander.  There may have been a rookie in front of him, but lining up next to the Rayburn was the very experienced Jamie Oldfield, and further back 5 time and current Australian Champion Brad Blake.

On a heavy track heat one got under way with Moyle slipping back to sixth at one point, however when the chequers were waved the Bunbury based driver worked his way back to fourth.

A key element to why Late Model racing is spectacular is the changing track conditions that drivers have to adapt to each lap, when Jason's second heat rolled around the surface had become slick and rough.  During the ten lap heat race the Moyle Race Engines supported Rayburn battle with Ryan Halliday, with Jason finishing ahead of Halliday in third behind Craig Vosbergen and Jay Cardy.

With the points combined from the two heats, positions were now set for the dashes, giving Moyle a fifth starting spot in Dash A.  In an uneventful race Jason would finish where he started, in fifth.

The first feature race of the new season got under way, in the early laps Jason got past Ryan Halliday for fourth and sat behind Jay Cardy looking for an opportunity to pass.  Around the half way mark Cardy spun which elevated Moyle to third.

While looking at standing on the podium at the first race of the season, while exiting turn two Jason was tagged from behind and spun the car, by the time he got it fired up again he was several laps down and out of contention.

"We were on track to get the season off to a good start, hopefully this doesn't come back to hurt us at the end" a disappointed Moyle explained.

"It was disappointing to finish the night like that ,after all the hard work of qualifying well and getting into a top 3 position.  Opportunities to challenge those top guys for position in a feature race are hard to come by. But there are also positives, the track conditions were tricky and we worked on the car all night and improved every time we went out the gate".

Attention will now turn to getting the car ready for the Grand Opening meeting at the Perth Motorplex this Saturday.
