Hill class of field during Southern All Stars stop at Smoky Mountain Speedway

by Chris Tilley
MARYVILLE, TN (April 14) - Vic Hill of Mosheim, TN led all 50 laps to claim the $5,000 prize during the Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series-sanctioned WIMZ Classic Rock 103.5 ‘Racing with the Stars’ event at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, TN on Saturday Night April 14, 2012.

On a nice spring evening, and with grandstands and tier parking nearly full, the SAS Late Models rolled into Smoky Mountain for their 12th ever event and Vic Hill would dominate the event setting fast time to claiming his second career SAS win, which was his first series victory since October 18, 2003 at Volunteer (TN) Speedway.

Before the green was set to wave and as the field was forming on the front chute, Ronnie Johnson, who was in Sanford Goddard’s Warrior house car had to be pushed back to the pits for engine woes and would not compete in the 50-lapper. Then as the field of 24 came down to take the green, a caution would be called and another try as the leaders jumped a bit early. While half the field had come around turns one and two, a five car mangle back in the pack would take a few extra moments to clean up before veteran starter Darrell Watson could wave his green flag again.

The first of only two yellows would come on lap 23 as Robby Moses spun in turn two. The second yellow flag would wave on lap 42 as Chad Ogle slowed in turn two with a right rear flat tire.

Hill would stretch out his lead during the long green flag runs and hold on for the win while driving the Landair Transport, Pilot Travel Centers, Orthopedic Institute of Western Kentucky, Outlaw Race Parts and VP Racing Fuels sponsored Vic Hill Racing Engines powered Warrior Race Car. While running third on the final lap, Randy Weaver had some engine problems and slowly made his way back to finish seventh and slowly roll under the checkered.

The Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series will be off a few weeks before making the first of four visits to the Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL paying $3,500 to win during the NASCAR Weekend event.
