Dickson Scores Winchester First in Stultz Memorial
Anderson Third LLM Winner With Saturday Victory

by Doug Watson
WINCHESTER, VA (April 14) - Lewiston Pa.’s Nick Dickson made his first Winchester Speedway start of the season a good one as he was victorious in last Saturday nights 40-lap Lee Stultz memorial. The win, for Dickson, was his first-ever Winchester late model feature win and was worth a cool $5000.

Dickson and Delaware legend Kenny Pettyjohn brought the field down to start the event. Dickson got the jump at the green, and that was all he needed, as he would lead every lap of the non-stop feature which was spun-off in just 12 minutes and 30 seconds. The win also made Dickson the third different late model winner of the three-week old season.

As Dickson had built up an insurmountable lead, the action behind him was quite intense. Five-time Winchester champion Bo Feathers and Kenny Pettyjohn raced hard for second and third for most of the 40-lap grind, With Feathers claiming the spot at the finish. Pettyjohn held on for third, ninth-starting Ronnie DeHaven Jr. took fourth and opening day winner Jason Covert rounded out the top-five. “This is just the third time out for this car.” Dickson said about his winning MasterSbilt no.17. “Luck plays a big part in these draw races and when we drew the one pill for time trials, I figured we’d be ok.” Heavy lapped traffic gave Dickson fits during the race. “That race felt like it was 12-hours long!” Dickson stated. “Going green to checker like that is tough because you don’t know how big of a lead you have, and there are so many good cars here you really have to be careful in traffic, but it all worked out good for us tonight.”

Setting fast-time in time trials over the 34-car field was Dickson with a one-lap time of 14.831. Heats went to Dickson, Pettyjohn and Covert with former WoO regular Tim Fuller winning the consolation.

Andy Anderson made the most of his front-row starting spot to take top-honors in the 20-lap limited late model feature. Anderson would lead every lap of the race but had to withstand the late race rush by opening day winner Brad Ritter to post the win. Jonathon DeHaven came from 12th to finish third, Tanner Kerr was fourth and 8th starting Bruce Kane completed the top-five. Heats for the 21 cars entered went to Anderson and Kerr.

Buddy Wilson continued his early season hot-streak as he won the 25-lap Potomac/Winchester challenge event for the street stocks, which was his second win of the season at Winchester. Wilson drew the pole for the feature and would go on to lead every lap of the caution-plagued event over a hard-charging Michael Carter. Mike Franklin came home third, David Kaiser was fourth and Brian Luttrell would round-out the top-five. Heats for the 19 cars on hand went to Wilson and Matt Kerns.

The Four-cylinder stock cars made their first appearance of the season and defending track champion Tommy Whitt would take the win. Whitt and Randy Linaburg battled hard for the last four-laps of the 15-lap race with Whitt squeaking out the victory over Linaburg as the duo came off the fourth turn for the checkered flag. Scott McCartney was third, Jeff Koller fourth and Ed Gageby was fifth. Heats for the 16 car field went to Whitt and Koller.

In the nightcap 15-lap u-car feature Travis Carroll, coming off two-consecutive runner-up performances, scored the hard fought win. Carroll took the race lead from Kevin Oates on lap-six and would then have to fend-off tenth-starting Joey Strosnider in a mad last lap shoot-out to score the popular win. Oates hung on for third, Steve Katz was fourth and 11th-starting Josh Wilkins would complete the top-five. Heats for 29 cars went to Gene Wilson, Steve Katz and Randy Wilkins.
