Quade Returns to Potomac Spotlight With Friday LLM Victory Corbin Steers New Ride to Street Stock Checkers
by Doug Watson Budds Creek, MD- Mechanicsville Md.’s Derrick Quade, the 2007 Potomac speedway limited late model track champion, became the third different division winner this season with his win in last Friday night’s 20-lap feature event.
Defending track champion Ben Bowie and invader JR Overstreet would pace the field to the initial waving of the green flag. Bowie shot into the race lead and appeared as though he would score his second win of the season as he lead effortlessly for the first seven-laps. Quade, who was second at the time, had other idea’s as he caught Bowie and would pass him for good on lap-eight. Quade, wheeling his Adams/Quade Racing Rocket no.23, would go on to lead the remaining twelve-laps to post his sixth career Potomac LLM feature win, but would have to repel the late race rush by eventual runner-up Scott Adams to score the popular win.
“This is only our first real race with this car.” Quade stated in victory lane. “We had motor problems in the first race we ran, then we raced with the late models a few weeks back to shake the car down, so it feels pretty good to win here tonight.” Track conditions kept Quade guessing the entire program. “The track got a lot slicker than what I thought it would, but I was able to find the traction, and here we are.” Bowie held on for second, Bruce Kane was fourth and Billy Tucker would complete the top-five. Heats went to Kane and Walker Arthur.
Defending Winchester speedway street stock champion Mike Corbin became the fourth different winner of the season with his win in the 16-lap street stock feature. Darren Alvey was driving the race of his career as he lead a majority of the main with Corbin in tow. Corbin at the controls of his Kinnie Logging no.4, then found the high-side of the speedway to his liking as he wrestled the top-spot from Alvey on the fifteenth-lap and would go on to score the win. Alvey hung tough for second, Mike Latham came from 12th for third, Troy Kassiris took fourth and David Kaiser rounded out the top-five. Heats went to Latham and Kaiser.
Former track champion John Burch became the fifth different winner of the five week old season with his win in the 15-lap hobby stock feature. Burch started on the pole and would lead every lap of the race over a hard charging Brian Adkins to collect his division-leading 47th career Potomac feature win. Jerry Deason was third, Bud Pickeral took fourth and Jonathon Raley filled the front-five. Heats went to Matt Tarbox and Will Nelson.
