Great American Dirt Track reschedules Showdown weekend

by Trenton Berry
SPRINGFIELD, MO (April 25) - With the anticipation for a less than favorable forecast this weekend, Patrick Johnson, owner of the Great American Dirt Track has decided to reschedule the running of the biggest race of the season at the Jetmore oval. "I spoke with a Meteorologist at the Dodge City Airport this afternoon, and he told me conditions weren't going to be favorable for a race this weekend," stated Johnson. "They are forecasting wind chills to be 45 degrees at 7 PM, and between 8-9 PM, they tell me it will feel like it's in the mid 30's. This is with a constant 20-30 mph wind too."

The race will be rescheduled with the same format and purse structure utilized. Johnson went on to say, "When we started this race, we wanted fans and racers to be able to come out to our facility and have a great time. Needless to say, we dealt with cooler than optimal temperatures and a stiff breeze last year. We're not going to subject our patrons, competitors and marketing partners to those conditions again."

The makeup date is preliminarily plotted for July 6th and 7th. There are still a few loose ends to be tied up, and once it's official a new release will be submitted outlining all the specifics. "I'm determined to make this an annual event," quoted Johnson. "We can't build this into the mega type of event, and get it to the level we want, by taking steps backwards. This race will happen. It's imperative we place the fans, drivers and sponsors at the fore front, always. That's why this weekend simply will not work."

I don't think the postponment of the races this weekend was handled very well. I dorve almost 600 miles to see racing only to find out it had been cancelled. The weather was fine, maybe a little cool but the races could have been held.  I ended up with a wasted trip.

I am extremely sorry to here that you wasted a trip to come see a race that was rescheduled due to the chance of bad weather. With all of the drivers that were planning on coming from as far a away as California we thought we needed to make a choice to postpne the race early enough that a trip was not wasted. We cancled the weekend of races at noon the Wednesday before the race. We made phone calls to every driver that might be coming, sent emails to every driver in our email lists, posted on about 20 message boards, posted on the track web site, posted on the CLMA & MARS DIRTcar Series Web Sites and posted on Facebook that the weekends races had been rescheduled. I'm sorry that you wasted a trip, but I really don't know what else we could have done to let people know that the weekends races had been rescheduled. It is always best to check the tracks web site or call the track before making such a long trip to go see a race. The information was on the Great American Dirt Tracks web site at 1:00pm Wednesday, April 25th.

Thank You for your reply. I should have checked the website before the trip.  I did check weather sites, (Weather.com and NOAA) and did not see where there was any major weather expected. As iit turned out the races could have been held without a problem. Although I don't agree with your decision I understand your decision to postpone the races.  I was just disappointed to drive that far to find out.  Once again thanks for your consideration in replying.
