Carrier Jr nets $6,000 ‘Southern 50’ victory at Southern Ohio Speedway

WHEELERSBURG, OH (April 27) - It was a record breaking night at the Southern Ohio Speedway on Friday, April 27th for the running of the “Southern 50.”  The largest crowd, fastest Late Model lap time, and largest Late Model car count were all new-era SOS records set on this night.

In the “Southern 50″ Late Model A-Main, Steve Francis and Jackie Boggs battled side by side for the lead at the start!  While racing side by side, Francis spun in the middle of turns one and two.  However, all of the field had not come across the start/finish line to complete lap one, so according to SOS rule, on a first lap caution there is a complete restart and all cars are given their spot back.  This would put Francis back on the pole for the second attempt to start of the race.

A caution flag fell on the second attempt to start, with the third start being a successful one.  Francis would lead the field into turn one with Jackie Boggs in second riding the high side.  Going into turns 3 and 4, Boggs drove hard into the turn and got sideways, nearly spinning out.  He was able to regroup and settled into fourth to complete the first lap.  On the second lap, Boggs went way high off of turn 2 and went off the banking and then pulled into the pit area.   This put Eddie Carrier Jr. into the second position.

For the next several laps Francis would lead the field with Carrier about seven car lengths behind in second.  The race took a turn on lap 17 when third place runner Jared Hawkins put his #37 machine on the high side.  Hawkins found speed up high and immediately began to reel in Carrier for second and run side by side with him for the position!  Hawkins made the pass on Carrier and set his sights on Francis.  On lap 22, Hawkins caught Francis and made the pass to take the lead on lap 23!  The race then took another dramatic turn as Francis slowed with mechanical problems and pulled off the track.

When the race restarted, Hawkins and Carrier had an incredible, side by side battle for the lead with Hawkins running up top and Carrier down low.  The two continued that side by side battle for the next 10 laps until Hawkins was eventually able to pull away by three car lengths on lap 33.  Two laps later, a caution flag flew, allowing the field to bunch back up with the leaders.  On the restart, Hawkins and Carrier continued their side by side battle for the lead with Carrier making the pass to take the lead on lap 37!

With Carrier now in the lead, third place runner Josh McGuire set his sights on Hawkins and would pass him for the second position.  McGuire then set his sights on Carrier and made a strong challenge at him, but just wouldn’t have enough to make the pass as Eddie Carrier Jr. came across the line to win the Southern 50!  Josh McGuire finished second with Jared Hawkins third, Donnie Moran fourth, and Jacob Hawkins fifth.  Steve Francis, Jackie Boggs, Eddie Carrier Jr., and Jared Hawkins won heat races while Tim Dohm won the B-Main.
