Murphy brings point lead to Marshalltown Deery on May 22

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (May 18) – Mike Murphy Jr. has the top spot in the standings but Darrel DeFrance will have the hometown crowd on his side when the Deery Brothers Summer Series travels to Marshalltown Speedway for a Tuesday, May 22 show. 

Murphy, from Colona, Ill., has won two of the first five IMCA Late Model tour events this season. DeFrance, meanwhile, won the last time out and will extend his string of perfect series attendance to 390 consecutive races next week.

The feature pays $2,000 to win.

Pit gates at Marshalltown open at 4:30 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 5 p.m. Hot laps are at 6:30 p.m. and racing starts at 7 p.m. 

Also on the card are Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods, racing for $500 to win plus IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National and Allstar Performance State points, Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks and modlites. 

Grandstand admission is $12 for adults and $2 for kids 12 and under. Pit passes are $25. 

Curt Martin of Independence has won five of the previous 21 Deery features held at Marshalltown. Jeff Aikey of Waterloo is a three-time winner there while two-time defending series champion Ray Guss Jr., of Milan, Ill., Jay Johnson of West Burlington and Terry Neal of Ely have each won twice.

Andy Eckrich of Oxford and Guss also own series wins this year.

The seventh of 20 tour dates this season is on Memorial Day Monday, May 28 at Boone Speedway.
