Hawkins gets double down bonus with victory at Elkins Racewayby Jeff Yost
KERENS, W.V. (May 25) - Another good crowd was entertained by some hot action on the 3/8 mile clay oval on Mountain Valley Bank Kids Night. Friday night. After winning the Topless 50 last Saturday at Tyler County, Jacob Hawkins stood the chance to take the double down bonus. $100 for any driver able to win back to back races at Elkins and Tyler. It has went unclaimed until this week. Hawkins easily took his heat win and that gave him the pole for the Jenkins Ford Super Late Model feature. The first yellow came out on lap 14 for a slowing Chuck Harper, and erasing the near full straight away lead Hawkins enjoyed. On the restart the field was coming to turns three and four for the green but the yellow stayed out bunching the field up behind the front runners. But when the race resumed so did the Hawkins smackdown. Hawkins took the win and $500 bonus. Billy Holbert had a great run but had to settle for second. Tim Senic, Cody Hardesty and Skip Hare rounded out the top five. Hawkins drives the St. Henry Night Club C & R Sanning #20H.
In the Budweiser Edge crate motor Late Model feature Louie Krushansky out dragged Steve Wilmoth to turn one and turned back every challenge Wilmoth could through at him. The self sponsored driver took his ‘thrown away” car to the checkers for his first crate motor Late Model win. Wilmoth gave chase but ended in second. Robert Cossell IV was third while Chad Green and Ron Parrish were fourth and fifth..
Mike Murphy started on the pole in the Miller’s Used Cars Modifieds with the benefit of the new twist at Elkins. The previous weeks winner, (or the next time you come back) has to qualify through a heat but will start no further than eighth. Brent Trimble won last week but had to start sixth. Trimble did manage to make it to second late in the event, but Murphy driving the Murphy’s Auto Sales / Boyer Motel & Restaurant had it covered. Matthew Chenoweth, Phil Jeffries, Robert Smith and Bill Vandevender completed the field.
It what can only be described as a very bizarre Valley Supply Street Stock feature had folks scratching their heads when it was over. Kenny Vest took the front spot at the outset. On lap one Randy Bohan and Vest made contact resulting in Vest setting backward on the back straight. The race continued with Bohan out front. With three laps to go second running Samantha Rogers pushed in turn two letting Chad McLean and Ronnie Tincher get by. On the white flag lap McLean drove into turn two too deep and made contact with Bohan, sending Bohan around. Bohan was sent to the tail with the ‘no stop rule’ in effect. McLean was also sent due to ‘rough driving’ After a few minutes of protesting from the guilty drivers, Bohan pulled off and McLean finally fell in line. It would hand the lead to Ronnie Tincher in a green, white, checkered finish. But, hold on it wasn’t that easy. When the green flag came back out, Tincher was having carburetor problems as the car spit and sputtered. Samantha Rogers closed in on Tincher but he was able to nurse his unsponsored #7 across the stripe first. Rogers, McLean, Barry Phares, and Rick Knicley were second through fifth.
Dusty Wamsley notched his second 4 cylinder feature as he bested Harold Hoard, Billy Martin, Justin Hornick, and David Propst.
In the Mini Wedges Logan Hitt captured his second checkerboard ahead of Elliot Newlon, Levi Nolan, Caleb Nolan and Austin Simmons.
This week at the Raceway it is the Valley Supply Street Stock Sizzler with $500 going to the winner. Also just announced former NASCAR driver Geoff Bodine will be at the Kerens facility on June 8.
