Troutman, Duffy stop streaks at The Rock

CUMBERLAND, Md. (June 2) - D.J. Troutman won convincingly with an exclamation point to end the streak of Mike Altobelli Jr. in the Limited Late Model Summer Championship on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Troutman’s victory came nearly seven seconds ahead of the Romney Cycles Limited Late Model field to stop Altobelli’s win streak at two races. Similarly, Brian Duffy won the Ernie D’s Enterprises Street Stock race to stop another streak by Jimmy Iser. Duffy’s win was his first of the season at The Rock.

Chad Gambol became the fourth different winner in four races of the TC Race Cars Hobby Stock class. Only Nick Iski was able to make a return trip to victory lane with his second win among the Sponaugle Towing 4-Cylinders.

Troutman topped Andy Fries, Steve Bard, Altobelli and Tim Smith Jr. in the final rundown of the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature. Troutman grabbed the lead from Bard in turn three after the initial green flag.

Troutman sailed ahead of the field as Fries closed in on Bard for second early in the race. By halfway, and without a caution flag to slow the pace, Troutman led Bard and Fries by a straightaway. Fries eventually cleared Bard for second on lap 14 but Troutman was well out of sight by the final laps.

The 16-lap Street Stock race was close from start to finish. Pole-sitter John Whitfield kicked off the race out front and Duffy and Kerry Molovich ran second and third. A couple of cautions on laps four and six kept the field in a tight pack.

When the race resumed, Duffy took off underneath Whitfield in a side-by-side battle that spanned nearly seven laps. Whitfield didn’t officially give up the lead until Duffy cleared him off of turn four with three laps to go. In the next turn, a spin by the fourth-place car driven by Daryl Whetstone didn’t ruin Duffy’s momentum. He took off on the restart and claimed the win by three car lengths. Whitfield, Molovich, Whetstone and Justin Bonnett rounded out the top five.

Pole-sitter Chad Gambol led the entire way in the 15-lap Hobby Stock feature. The race was undecided until the final laps with Justin Michael, David Riley and Jimmy Moreland all contending for the win.

Gambol led Michael and Mike Duck until Duck spun on lap eight. Riley moved to third and came into contention with Michael to try to overtake Gambol after the restart. Gambol had the field covered until the checkered flag by five car lengths. Michael, Riley, Moreland and Duck completed the top five.

Iski started the 12-lap 4-Cylinder race in third and needed four laps to get by pole-sitter Davey Lambert for the lead. Once out front, Iski earned some breathing room over Lambert and Ian Will until a caution waved on lap nine for one of the early contenders, Neil Bauer Jr.

Even with the caution, Lambert couldn’t muster a final charge at Iski. Iski took the checkered flag by five car lengths over Lambert. Will, who started 11th, was the big mover of the race to finish third. Jason Riggleman and Dwain Rhodes wrapped up the fourth and fifth places. Iski received a bonus from Sponaugle Towing for the win.

No racing is scheduled for next weekend. Racing will return on Saturday, June 16 for the Hobby Stock Spring Championship and Autograph night. Gates open at 5 p.m. with racing at 7:15 p.m.
