Feathers Career-First LM Score Comes in Winchester Thriller
Anderson Joins 3-Win Club With LLM Victory

by Doug Watson
Winchester, VA- “I still can’t believe I’m standing here right now.” Were the words from last Saturday night’s Winchester speedway late model winner Trever Feathers.

Feathers, the 2010 Winchester limited late model champion, drove to his first-career late model feature win in the 40-lap Paul Johnson memorial and the $3000 payday that came with it. With his win, Feathers became the eighth different late model winner of the nine-week old season.

Feathers and Jason Covert brought the 23-car starting field to the initial green flag of the event. Feathers shot into the race lead as the mob entered turn one. Utilizing the low-line of the speedway Feathers kept-up his quick pace as he would lead through the half-way point in the race. Meanwhile Jason Covert, who had ran in Feathers tracks up to this point, discovered the top and blasted into the race lead on the twenty-first circuit. Unfortunately, Covert’s lead would only last for six more laps as he would drop from contention with mechanical issues on the twenty-seventh lap. Feathers then re-assumed the race lead and would lead the final thirteen laps, despite the furious late race rush by Roy Deese Jr. and Friday Bedford (PA) winner DJ Myers, that had the Winchester fans on their feet.

“I was beginning to doubt myself.” The third generation race stated in victory lane. “We’ve had so many good starting spots this season and haven’t been able to capitalize, and tonight we were able to do it.” Feathers thought he would have a second-place car after Jason Covert took the lead after half-way. “Jason Covert was the class act of this field tonight.”
Feathers bottom-lined. “I knew he was a little better than we were on the top, and when I saw him go by, I figured our chances to win were over. I just want to thank my Mom and Dad and all the people who help with this car, it’s still hard to believe we won in the late models in our first season!” Roy Deese Jr. posted his best finish of the season in second, Myers came from eighth to collect third, twelfth-starting Kenny Pettyjohn was fourth and Gary Stuhler rounded out the top-five. Setting fast time in time trials over the 25-car field was Trever Feathers with a one-lap time of 15.712. Heats went to Feathers, Cover and Jeremy Miller.

Andy Anderson came out on top after a spirited battle with Jonathon DeHaven to post his third win of the season in the 20-lap limited late model feature. DeHaven and Anderson ran one-two for the first seventeen-laps of the event before Anderson took the lead for good on the eighteenth-lap. DeHaven settled for second, Brad Ritter came from twelfth to finish third, Justin Fulton was fourth and James Myers filled the top-five. Heats for the 22-cars entered went to DeHaven and Anderson.

Mike Franklin became a two-time winner with his victory in the 15-lap pure stock feature. Franklin was the class of the field as he started on the pole and would lead every lap of the caution-free event to win by a straightaway over runner-up Mike Bennett. David Kaiser was third, Mike Corbin fourth and Craig Parrill completed the top-five. Heats for the 15 cars went to Corbin and Franklin.

Bryan Green was victorious for the second-time this season as well as he was the winner of the 15-lap enduro stock main. Green snared the top spot from Ray Priest on the twelfth-lap and would drive off to post the win. Priest held on for second, Dustin Proctor was third, “Krazy” Kenny Thomas took fourth and Devon Riley completed the top-five. Thomas was the heat winner.

Randy Linaburg also became a two-time Winchester winner with his win in the 15-lap four-cylinder feature. Linaburg wrestled the race lead fro Scott McCartney on the eleventh-lap and would go on to score the popular win. Defending class champion Tommy Whitt came home second, McCartney settled for third, Roger Whitlock was fourth and Allen Whitt Jr. rounded out the top-five. Heats for the 16 cars on hand went to Whitt and McCartney.
