Smith, Henney, Potter, Laye & Williamson Take Exciting Wins on Excellent Hesston Surface (Hesston, PA) The "Dirt Doctor" and his crew worked their track magic at Hesston Speedway Saturday Night and generated a perfect multi-grove race track. Tim Smith Jr., Bill Henney, Rick Potter, Ryan Laye and Justin Williamson came out winners in feature races highlighted by lead changes and 3-car battles throughout the program. Tim Smith, Jr of McVeytown, PA found himself in he Semi-Late Model Sportsman winner's circle for the 2nd tim this year. The feature started with Steve Bailor and Josh Berrier leading the front row to the green flag. With the 1st lap, Mike Altobelli Jr. charged to the front to take the lead. After a caution flag on lap 2, Dave Leidy was able to take control of the race on a double file restart and paced the field for laps 3 to 6. Altobelli powered back into the lead on a lap 7 double file restart. As the field raced down the backstraight, Smith Jr and Leidy got hooked together after making side by side contact. When the cars broke free, Leidy spun in turn 3 bringing out another caution. Because 1 lap was not completed after the double file restart, the racing resumed with the only single file restart of the race. Altobelli continued to control the race with Smith in hot pursuit. Smith managed to grab the lead on lap 15, but had to fight off Altobelli and 15th starting Robbie Black for the win. Black moved into 2nd on lap 17 but Altobelli took back the position on the following lap. 2011 track champion Rance Garlock then got into the mix in the final 5 laps. A caution with 1 lap remaining set up a green-white checker finish in what would become a 26-lap race. On the double file restart, Smith fought off Altobelli once again, with Garlock taking 3rd from Black. At the checkers, Smith lead Altobelli by a few car lengths with Garlock, Black and last race winner Rick Singleton rounding out the top 5. Cory Houck, Bailor, Berrier, Steve Billet and Ronnie Bottenfield rounded out the top 10. Heat race wins for the 22 car field went to Singleton, Bailor and Eric Irvin. Billy Henney of Huntingdon proved why he is the defending A-Cadet champion as he recovered from a heat race incident to take the 20 lap feature win. Mike Desch lead the 1st lap before Cris Edwards took control. Tim Krape moved into 2nd on lap 6 and began an exciting side-by-side race with Edwards over the next 5 laps. On lap 11, Krape was scored the leader with Edwards in pursuit. Meanwhile Henney had advanced from his 10th place starting position and began racing Edwards for 2nd on lap 12. Henney was able to grab 2nd on lap 16 then set his sights on Krape. On the next lap, Henney took the lead. Krape, Edwards and Boyd Brode to battled for 2nd, swapping positions during the final laps. At the finish, it was Henney, Edwards, Krape and Brode with Desch finishing 5th. Rich Swope, Dave Brown, Randy Wible, Rusty Garlock and Robert Williamson rounded out the top 10. The 16 lap Hobby-Modified feature saw 3 cars battle during the 2nd half of the race, but when everything was settled, a different driver from those 3 was the winner. Rick Potter of Everett, PA captured his 2nd checker of the season after an exciting race that was determined in the tech area. Lou Wannyn took the lead at the outside with Potter in pursuit. On a lap 7 restart, Potter was shuffled back to 7th and an incredible race began between Wannyn, Ryan Sager and Terry Norris. Norris used the outside grove to race around Sager on lap 12 while Sager was trying to take the lead from Wannyn. The next lap Norris use the same move to take the lead. Wannyn spun on lap 13 collecting 3rd and 4th running Brad McGinnis and Derek Graybill. On the restart, Potter was able to take 2nd and at the check flag it was Norris, Potter, Sager, Carl Snare Wannyn and Andy Los. Post-race tech found an illegal suspension part on Norris awading the win to Potter and advancing the rest of the field. Ryan Laye made his 1st visit to Hesston a successful one by winning the Mod-4 feature. Matt Williamson and Laye raced for nearly the entire distance of the 15 lap race. Williamson was scored the leader through lap 12, with Laye taking control on lap 13. Opening night winner Ronnie Garlock stayed in sight, running in 3rd position the entire race. At the finish, it was Lay, Williamson, Garlock, Chris Anderson and Denny Cramer taking the top 5 positions. Despite a restart penalty, Justin Williamson was able to charge to a win in the Roadrunner feature. Williamson actually started in the 5th position with the penalty, and was able to overtake early race leader and 2011 track champion Dave Lambert on lap 5 of the 12 lap feature. Lambert later retired with a flat tire. Ellis Whitsel raced from 10th on the grid to come in 2nd followed by Shawn Fessler, EJ Johnson and Ryan Claycomb. The Penn Mar Vintage 15 lap feature was won by Aaron Brommer. Fred Krikbaum caught Brommer in lapped traffic and the two raced side by side for the lead, but Brommer remained in control. Kirkbaum finished 2nd followed by Paul Hoffman, Paul Bacchus and Stew Wenrich.
