Leidy ends Troutman’s streak at The Rock

CUMBERLAND, Md. -- Dave Leidy turned his first appearance into a memorable first win at the The Rock, Allegany County Speedway on Saturday night.

Leidy’s win snapped the three-race streak of D.J. Troutman in the Romney Cycles Limited Late Model class. Bob Jay also added his name to the list of winners in his first appearance in the Ernie D’s Street Stocks. Jimmy Moreland and Mike Lauffer both won for the second time in the TC Race Cars Hobby Stocks and Sponaugle Towing 4-Cylinders, respectively.

Leidy, of Neelyton, Pa., avoided being caught up in a two-car accident at the outset of the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature. When the field was reset for another attempt, Leidy started on the outside front row and grabbed the lead from Chad Myers as the green came out.

From that point, Leidy built a lengthy lead over Myers, Steve Bard and D.J. Troutman. Only the second caution of the race at lap eight seemed to hold up Leidy. Bard and Troutman, who started sixth, managed to get around Myers over the three laps following the restart.

Leidy maintained a two-second lead to closeout the victory. Bard was the runner-up and Troutman claimed third. Myers ended up fourth and Ted Gallaher completed the top five.

Jay kept Jimmy Iser from winning his third straight in the Street Stock feature by hanging on in the waning laps to win by a couple of car lengths. Jay, the 2006 champion, led every lap after getting ahead of Daryl Whetstone on the initial start.

Iser came from fifth up to second by lap 10. He prodded Jay to the inside a few laps shy of the finish but had to settle for second. John Whitfield recovered from a spin on lap four to finish third. Whetstone and Jamey Swank rounded out the top five.

Moreland went the distance over Justin Michael and Mike Duck in a close Hobby Stock race. Moreland got ahead of Michael from the outside row at the start and Duck was in the mix throughout the 15-lap race.

David Riley, who is fighting to hang onto the point lead over Moreland, finished fourth in a car borrowed from Brandon Inglish at the beginning of the night. Fifth-place went to Brian Ringer.

Lauffer’s 4-Cylinder win came after a turbulent opening lap. Drivers pushed each other three-wide early and Lauffer picked his way through the field from the eighth spot to get the lead by the fourth corner.

After the scramble on the opening lap, Lauffer set the pace for the remaining 11 laps. He pulled away from Nick Iski and Dwain Rhodes on a restart with two laps to go. Iski finished second after getting around Rhodes before the finish. Jason Poland and Brandon Lucas completed the top five.

The Rock will be closed for the next two weeks. Racing resumes on Saturday, July 28 with all four classes. Gates open at 5 p.m. with racing at 7:15 p.m.
