Chris Lapp Claims First-Ever Lucas Cattle Company ULMA Feature Victory

Callaway Raceway hosted the 29th Lucas Cattle Company ULMA-sanctioned event of the year last Friday evening and once the night concluded, it was a new member driver Chris Lapp of Barnett, Missouri who grabbed the spotlight. Lapp took the win in what turned out to be one of the most exciting feature events of the season and ultimately the lone ULMA race of the weekend due to wet conditions washing out the scheduled event on Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Several main events for the late models at Callaway Raceway this season have come down to the wire and last week’s race was certainly no exception with no less than four drivers appearing to have the car to take home the victory. Justin Russell, who was making his first appearance in a new car after a recent accident destroyed the car he started the season with, was able to grab the early lead early and appeared to be heading for the checkered flag. Justin’s Brother, Jason, who currently leads ULMA points, raced hard in the early laps with his sibling; however, Justin kept the elder Russell behind him just as three-time Callaway winner Bob Test came into the picture to make it a three-car battle.

Unfortunately, Justin’s car suffered mechanical failure in the hotly contested battle and when the car lost power, Test and Jason Russell actually made contact trying to avoid the slowing car. Luckily, the two were able to keep things righted and the race resumed with Jason Russell, Bob Test, and now Chris Lapp battling for the top spot. After the lap 16 caution flag, a three way battle for lead waged on to the finish. On the final circuit, Lapp took over the top spot and held on for the victory edging out Test and Jason Russell. Zeke Langley posted one of his strongest runs of the season by coming away in the fifth position. Gage Wineland, Ashley Lancaster, Chris Cox, Walt Imhoff, and Justin Russell also posted finishes inside the top ten. There were 12 ULMA member drivers present among the 15 competitors. Callaway Raceway hosts another Friday night program this weekend, for more information check out www.callawayraceways.com.

Another ‘Fast Friday’ race program takes place at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Missouri this weekend. Close and competitive racing this season has kept late model fans guessing who will come away with the $600 first-place money. Feature winners this season include Chris Hawkins (2), Jason Bodenhamer, Brett Wood, and most recently, Joe Walkenhorst. Former track champions Kevin Coyne, Jimmy Morris, and Steve Clancy have run strong so far but have yet to visit victory lane. Jon Binning, whose most recent two finishes are 1st and 2nd respectively, is another driver hungry for a win. With just two ULMA points-earning races available this weekend at tracks several hours apart and with many drivers on the fringe of posting 15 finishes towards the championship, the mystery remains as to who will show up and go for the wins. The late model feature pays $80 to start. For complete general track rules, start times, and directions visit www.valleyspeedway.com.

Lucas Oil Speedway has a special event scheduled for Saturday night and will not host ULMA action this week. The speedway has announced that it will make a decision soon on the race that was canceled last week due to heavy storms that rolled through just before the gates opened last weekend. Stay tuned to the track’s website at www.lucasoilspeedway.com for developing information. ULMA drivers return to the track in Wheatland, Missouri on Saturday, July 21.
