GENTRY GRABS 2nd LATE MODEL WIN AT HILLTOP; TEAM OUTLAW 101 POCKETS BONUS BUCKS

by Mike Swanger
MILLERSBURG, OH (July 21) - The fans were treated to another action packed night of racing on Bugs-R-Gone night on the ‘Hill’. Dave Hornikel and Wooster’s JR Gentry won the heats to start on the front row of the Holmes Tire Late Model feature and those two would go side by side for the opening two laps before Gentry eased into the lead with fast qualifier and dash winner George Lee then challenging Hornikel for second. All three were bumper to bumper on the high side of the track until a lap eight caution. On the restart, Lee went low and powered past Hornikel for second with Rocky Owens pestering Hornikel for third as Mark Gardiner set up shop in fifth. Two different incidents happened on lap 14 as the caution would be for Larry Bellman in the back of the field but Gardiner and Ryan Markham ahead of that got tangled together in turn two and ending both of their nights. As the green reappeared, Gentry and his El Campesino Restaurant, Quality Fiberglass and Pittstop Auto Clinic #14 used the highline as Lee and Hornikel were both in his tire tracks. With laps winding down, Lee tried the low groove to get around Gentry but Gentry’s momentum on the highside kept him out front with Hornikel holding third as Owens and Wayne Maffett Jr. dueled for fourth. With the checkered flag up, Gentry, the points leader, crossed the line first with Lee and Hornikel following as the difference between the top three was only .89 of a second. Owens won the battle for fourth over Maffett Jr.

In the Raceday Photos Modified main, Vic Hottinger and John Sluka started on the front row via their heat wins with Sluka taking early control but quick timer and dash winner Jesse Wisecarver took over on lap four. The Zanesville driver and his Creno’s Pizza East, Formation Cementing and Jewett Motorsports #101 would build up a straight away lead with Sluka in second as Jimmy Smith, Beau Bradley and Robin Duston raced for third. Running the high groove, Wisecarver may have tapped the wall on a lap as after a lap 12 caution, he was noticeably slower in the finishing laps but was able to sustain a ten car length lead over Sluka by 1.75 seconds and win for the third time this year at Hilltop and pick up the bonus money after winning on Friday at Wayne County Speedway. In victory lane, Wisecarver discovered he had broke a ball joint. Smith, Bradley and Duston filled out the top five as Norm Aronhalt started 18th and finished 6th in the Tom Conley owned #27c. Robert Page won the last chance race.

Kyle Dickinson also had a chance to collect some bonus dollars after winning Friday at WCS and he and fellow heat winner Colt Maxwell started on the front row of the Street Stock feature. Jeremy Dickerson moved into second on lap two and took the lead away from Dickinson on lap five with Maxwell in hot pursuit. Two laps later, Dickinson of Nashport, would reclaim the lead in his Creno’s Pizza East, Matt LaPage Race Engine’s, Jewitt Motorsports #101. Maxwell would do a textbook slide job on Dickerson with four laps to go with Dickerson bumping the wall and breaking the #44d and ending his night. Maxwell made a final lap charge on Dickinson to no avail as Dickinson claimed his first win at Hilltop and the bonus money. Tony Cline ran a strong third with Bob Chilcote and John Wilson rounding out the top five.

For a while it looked like three #101’s were going to park in victory lane as Jerry Adkins led the first two-thirds of the Mini Stock Main, but it was Glenmont’s Jason St. John powereing past at that point and then holding off Adkins on the final lap to put the Tobacco Hut, Palmer Mechanical Contractors and Finnishline Auto Body #45 in victory lane for the first time this year. Points leader Terry Adkins finished third followed by Brett Adkins and Moose Workman. Heat winners were St. John and Jerry Adkins as Gary Hensel Jr. bested the last chance race.

For the second week in a row, Sunbury’s David Potts parked his Tickets Galore, Eagle Insurance and ProScape Landscaping #26 in victory lane for the Bugs-R-Gone Trucks. John Large lead on the second and third laps but hit the turn one wall on lap four to end his evening as points leader Kevin Potts pulled into second behind his son, as Gordon Zimmer, Jim Large and Cole Lillibridge filled out the top five. David Potts also won the heat race.

Hannah Rose of Jeromesville led all the way for her second Putt-N-Stuff Wedge win of the season. Driving the Fultz Fabrication #42 was chased by Tristen Brown, Taylor Huggins, Braxton Wilson and Josey Lillibridge. Rose and Brown paced the heat races.

Next Saturday night, July 28th, another regular night of action is on tap for Hilltop Speedway with all six divisions on the racing card.
