Knaub Claims Fourth Late Model Win as Billet Claims Seventh Late Model Track Championship on Saturday Night at SSP
Newberrytown, PA (September 15, 2012) – Dover's Gene Knaub collected his second consecutive Late Model feature win and fourth of the season on Saturday Night at the Susquehanna Speedway Park. Enola’s Kody Lehman won the PA Sprint Series 20 lapper. Jim Palm, Jr. of Loysville won his first feature of the season claiming the Street Stock race. Lancaster’s Donnie Broderick won his third Xtreme Stock Car feature of the season. Carlisle’s Curt McDade led all 15 laps of the Road Warrior feature. The 25-lap Late Model feature found polesitter Ron Coleman leading the first four laps of the race. “Hotshoe” Gene Knaub quickly moved from a seventh place starting spot and into the lead on the fifth circuit. Knaub held a steady line throughout the race slowed periodically by the caution flag. As Knaub continued to lead, the other top five spots changed almost every lap. When the checkered flag flew, Knaub took the victory over Randy Christine Jr. J.R. Rodriguez topped off his rookie season with a third place podium finish. Bud With finished close behind in fourth. Ben Whitaker took fifth place and claimed an additional $25.00 for the JR’s Paving Hard Charger award by moving forward 18 spots after starting in the 23rd spot. Carl Billet claimed his seventh SSP Late Model Track Championship with his sixth place finish. Coleman, Knaub and Billy Wampler were the heat race victors. The 20-lap PA Sprint Series began with polesitter Jason Bergstresser taking command of the top spot. Kody Lehman took over the leader position on the very next lap and never looked back to claim his first SSP feature win of the season. Eric Parker finished in the runner-up spot with Matt Mountz finishing in third after starting fifteenth. George Riden claimed the fourth spot with early leader Bergstresser rounding out the top five. Bergstresser, Lehman and Parker were heat race winners. From the front row, Jim Palm Jr. took the early lead of the Street Stock 20-lapper. In a caution-marred feature event, speedway officials reduced the race to 15 laps midway through the event to attempt to complete the feature quicker as the field dwindled. Palm was able to lead the remainder of the laps to claim his first win of the season. Randy Zechman took the runner-up spot at the end to claim his second Street Stock track championship in three years. Mike Zeigler Jr. finished close behind in third, with Matt Wampler and Scott Sipe rounding out the top five. Zeigler, Zechman and Dustin Hollinger were heat race winners. In the 20-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature event, Tim Hahn took the early lead from the front row. However, Donnie Broderick had other intentions and grabbed the lead on the second circuit. Throughout the race, there were four cars that could take the lead at anytime but Broderick was able to hold on to claim third feature win of the season. Patrick McClane finished in the runner-up spot and clinched his first SSP Xtreme Stock Car Track Championship. Cameron Benyou finished close behind in third, followed by Ricky Bender in fourth. Bob Bussey was the Madison House hard charger moving up six spots from an eleventh place starting spot to finish fifth. Heat race winners were Broderick and Adam Smith. Curt McDade led from start-to-finish to capture the 15-lap Road Warrior feature event. McDade also claimed his first career Road Warrior Track Championship. Dennis Dorosz finished in second, followed by Adam Peters and Daryl Sipe. Robbie Carroll rounded out the top five. Carroll and Gary Grim were heat race victors.
