Eckert takes Fall Classic for second straight year at Selinsgrove Speedway
Selinsgrove Speedway
SELINSGROVE, Pa. (October 6) – For the second year in a row, Rick Eckert of York closed out the racing season at Selinsgrove Speedway with a convincing victory in Saturday night’s 30-lap Fall Classic for late models. Eckert, last year’s World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion, earned $5,000 for his sixth career win at the track driving the J&K Salvage No. 24.
Eckert, who got his start in late model racing at Selinsgrove in 1984, set a new one-lap track record of 18.848 seconds in qualifying. The Selinsgrove victory marked his fifth of the year coming off the national late model circuit.
Polesitter Coleby Frye powered into the lead at the start of the late model main event. He was chased by second-place starter Dan Stone and third-place starter Jeff Rine. In the early laps of the race, a wheel-to-wheel battle unfolded between Stone and Rine for the runner-up position. On the 12th circuit, Rine secured second and set his sites on Frye.
At the midway point of the race, sixth-place starter Rick Eckert advanced to third. On a lap 17 restart, Eckert passed Rine for second racing off turn two. On the 18th circuit, Frye’s car lost power momentarily due to a reported faulty ignition box coming off turn four which forced both Eckert and Rine to take evasive action on the frontstretch. Eckert took the outside lane around Frye’s faltering race car and the lead entering turn one.

In the final laps, fourth-place starter Jason Covert began to show some speed and moved into the third position. The caution flag unfurled on lap 24 when Frye’s car rolled to a stop on the backstretch. On the ensuing restart, Eckert opened up a lead and posted a 1.8-second margin of victory over Rine, Covert, Stone, and Dylan Yoder.
