Fuller races to $10K ‘The Ultimate’ feature victory at Hesston Speedway

Hesston Speedway
HESSTON, PA, (October 12-13) 2 drivers came away big winners on their 1st visit to the Hesston Speedway during "The Ultimate" weekend at Hesston Speedway for Speedmonster/ULMS Super Late Models. Tim Fuller of Watertown, NY added his name to the list of winners of "The Ultimate," winning $10,000. Rick Eckert of York, PA won Friday's $4,044 to win, "Moonsault Scramble."  George Dixon, Jr., Greg Moore, Ryan Sager and Chris Anderson were big winners in the Challenger Super Championships.

"The Ultimate" 71 lap feature was lead to the green with Rich Gardner and 2010 winner Jason Covert on the front row of the 28 car field. Fuller sat 6th on the grid after the redraw. Covert immediately set sail in the initial laps with Gardner and Dave Hess Jr. racing for 2nd. Hess took over 2nd on lap 4 while Covert began to build a lead. As Covert raced into lap traffic on lap 14, the action began to heat up and the top 6 cars of Covert, Hess, Gardner, 2011 winner Jamie Lathroum, Fuller and Dutch Davies were racing in a tight swarm.

Gardner made a slick move around Hess to retake 2nd on lap 15 and then took the lead from Covert on lap 20 with Hess taking 2nd on lap 21. Going down the back straight on that same lap, Gardner and the lapped car of Greg Fetters became locked after making contact. Hess hit the duo going full speed, sending Gardner high upon the wall and across the track. Both Gardner and Hess were eliminated from the event.

Covert resumed command, while Fuller powered from 4th to 2nd. On lap 24, another caution appeared for the slowing card of Jerry Bard. This final caution of the race set up a double file reestart. Covert fired 1st, but Fuller outraced him around the 1st turn to take the lead with Jamie Lathroum in 3rd and Dylan Yoder advancing to 4th after starting 12th, and Mason Zeigler in 5th.

Fuller began to build up a lead while Covert, Lathroum and Yoder ran together. Scott LeBarron moved around Zeigler for 5th on lap 32 with Eckert passing Ziegler 4 laps later. Eckert overtook LeBarron for 5th on lap 45 while Yoder made a move around Lathroum to claim 3rd on lap 56.

Fuller raced into lapped traffic in the final laps of the race allowing the others to close, but remained in control to take the $10,000 win, his 1st win of 2012 in his Kennedy Motorsports entry. Covert, Yoder, Lathroum and Eckert followed with LeBarron, Matt Lux, Mike Lupfer, Chad Hollenbeck and 2012 Speedmonster champion Nick Dickson rounding out the top 10.

Covert, Hess, Bard, Lathroum and Lupfer took wins in the competitive Super Late Model heat races for the 42 car field. Consolation wins went to Dickson and Austin Hubbard. Satterlee was the G & R Excavating and Demoltion Pass-Max winner after advancing 11 positions.

In Friday's "Moonsault Scramble," Eckert took home the $4,044 win using the high side of the excellent track surface. Mike Lupfer and Jerry Bard led the field of 27 cars to the green flag with Bard moving into the lead. Fourth starting Jeff Rine moved past Lupfer to second on lap 2, as Austin Hubbard and fifth starting Rick Eckert filled the top five. Scott LeBarron passed Eckert for fifth on lap 10, moving the eventual winner out of the top five as green flag laps continued to click by. With the leaders beginning to encounter race traffic with all 27 cars still racing, Lupfer regained second from Rine on lap 11. LeBarron continued to march forward, passing Hubbard for fourth on lap 12. Lupfer closed in on leader Bard, as the top two raced bumper to bumper at lap 15. Eckert passed Hubbard for fifth on lap 17. At lap 20, the battle heated up for the lead as Lupfer made several inside bids for the lead, with Bard able to fend off the challenges.

The battle for the lead was interrupted as the first of just two caution periods in the event came out on lap 24 as Greg Oakes slowed on the front stretch. Bard chose the outside lane for the double file restart, but Lupfer was able to nose ahead to take the lead on lap 25. A tangle at the flagstand at this very moment brought out what would be the final caution period of the race. Tyler Hershey and Jim Yoder got the worst of it, as Rine and Hubbard also exited the race at this point.

The top five for the final restart would be Lupfer leading Bard, LeBarron, Eckert, and ULMS Champion Boom Briggs from eighth starting spot. Lupfer chose the inside lane for the double file restart, but it would be Bard regaining the lead at lap 26 with Eckert now hot on his trail. Eckert went by Bard to take the lead on lap 29, and he would race away from the field at this point by turning some of the fastest laps of the race.

Eckert went on to take the win with no serious challenges, as Bard settled for second. LeBarron was third, taking the position from Lupfer with one lap remaining. From 20th starting position, Dave Hess, Jr. finished fifth, as he passed Briggs for fifth on lap 37. From 27th on the grid after using a provisional starting spot, Gregg Satterlee was one spot short of a top five finish, coming home sixth. Briggs, Matt Lux, Dutch Davies, and Jamie Lathroum rounded out the top ten.

Six heat races were run for the 48 entrants, and were won by Briggs, Nick Dickson, LeBarron, Lathroum, Lux, and Hubbard. Hershey, Hess, and Mason Ziegler took B-Main wins. Satterlee was again the G & R Excavating and Demoltion Pass-Max winner, advancing 21 positions.

Nick Dickson of Lewistown, PA was crowned the 2012 Speedmonster Champion, winning over Jerry Bard by just 8 points. Scott LeBarron finished only 1 point behind Bard in 3rd, with Jason Covert and Gregg Satterlee taking 4th and 5th.
