Knaub Claims Late Model Feature at SSP on Saturday Night
Newberrytown, PA (June 22, 2013) – Dover’s Gene Knaub claimed his second Late Model win of the season at the Susquehanna Speedway Park on Saturday Night. Hanover’s Mike Walls won his third Street Stock feature of the year. York's Patrick McClane returned to victory lane taking the 20-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature. The 15-lap Road Warrior feature was won by York Haven's Daryl Sipe for his sixth of the season. York Haven’s Zakari Kitner claimed the Mini Van feature. Reed Salony of Seven Valleys won the first 20-lap Sidewinder Sprint Car feature event. Mike Zeilonis of Mt. Holly Springs claimed the second Sidewinder Sprint feature. Roy Denike of New Oxford won the excitement filled 20-lap Figure 8 feature. Chase Billet grabbed the early lead from outside the front row of the 25-lap Late Model feature. Dan Zechman and Billy Wampler battled for the runner-up spot just behind Billet. Unfortunately, Zechman retired from the race midway through the race with mechanical failure, moving Gene Knaub into the battle for the top spot with Billet and Wampler. On lap 15, Knaub was able to get by Wampler for the runner-up spot. Setting his sights on Billet, the two began to close in on lapped traffic. On lap 20, Billet got stuck behind a slower car, enabling Knaub to get by and grab the lead. A caution on lap 23 gave Billet one more shot to recapture the top spot, but he was unable to once the green flag dropped. Knaub claimed his second feature of the year over Billet at the end. Justin Ehrhart came from the back after being involved in a first lap caution to claim third place. Kyle Lear started fourteenth and finished fourth to claim the JR’s Paving Hard Charger award of the race. Wampler settled for fifth at the end. Wampler and J.R. Rodriguez were the heat race winners. Scott Thunberg led the field of Street Stocks to the green for the 20 lapper. Thunberg led the first two circuits until Mike Walls blasted into the lead on lap three. Randy Zechman moved into the runner-up spot on the next lap and set his sights on Walls. Throughout the caution filled event, Zechman was unable to make the pass to win enabling Walls to claim his third win of the year. Zechman settled for second with Jim Palm earning a podium spot by finishing third. Bob Scott Jr. returned from an early race caution to finish in fourth. Chris Derr rounded out the top five. Walls and Palm were heat race victors. The 20-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature event saw Donnie Broderick take the lead on the start from outside the front row. “Blockbuster” Cameron Benyou and Patrick McClane battled for the runner-up spot as Broderick set the pace. On lap 9, Benyou got into the frontstretch wall, forcing him to retire from the race. McClane continued to put pressure on Broderick for the top spot, and finally was able to make the winning pass on lap 17 to claim his fourth win of the season. McClane also claimed the Madison House Hard Charger after starting sixth and claiming the top spot. Broderick settled for second with Tim Hahn finishing strong in third. John Frye and Dan Snyder rounded out the top five. The heat race winners were Broderick and Johnny Palm. Curt McDade set the pace early over Daryl Sipe in the 15-lap Road Warrior feature. As the pair entered lapped traffic, McDade gained an advantage but struggled with the final car in a pack of six allowing Sipe to scoot by into the lead on lap 11. McDade challenged but was unable of the take the lead back as Sipe beat him to the checkered flag at the line. Dennis Dorosz finished third, followed by Cory Phillips and Shaun Kuykendall rounding out the top five. Dorosz and Phillips were heat race winners. In the Mini Van feature, Zakari Kitner took the Mini Van victory over Donny Groff. Groff was also the heat race victor. The Sidewinder Sprints competed in two 15-lap feature events. Reed Salony picked up the win in the non-stop feature #1 with Rich Halter very close behind. Halter briefly took the lead on lap 14 but could not hold onto it coming out of turn four. Mike Zielonis finished third, followed by Rohan Beasley. Adam Meier rounded out the top five. In the second 15-lap Sidewinder Sprint feature, Mike Zielonis led from start-to-finish to claim the victory. Reed Salony finished in second, followed by Rohan Beasley and Rich Halter. Chris Crull rounded out the top five in the nightcapper. Roy Denike was victorious in the 20-lap Figure 8 race over Brandon Doyle and Richard Wolfe.
