DROWN DASHES TO THIRD NAPA WCS LATE MODEL WIN

by Mike Swanger
ORRVILLE, OH (June 24) - The Lias Tire Late Models were part of the UNOH All Star Sprint Speedweek stop at NAPA Wayne County Speedway on Monday night with Devin Moran starting the night out with the Dzugan Fire & Rescue fast time and then in the first of three highly competitive heat races, sponsored by Summit Racing Equipment, won that as Russ King and Keith Berner topped the other two. After the redraws for the starting spots in the 25 lap feature, it would be Doug Drown and Charlie Duncan on the front row and when the green flag dropped, Duncan got a good start as Drown dropped back to fourth behind Devin Moran and Berner. Moran would stay glued to the back of Duncan’s car as both ran the bottom of the track. Drown would pick off Berner on lap five and started to reel in the two frontrunners as he would jump up on the high side to do this. On lap 11 Drown edged past Moran for second and on the next circuit would rocket past Duncan coming out of turn two to take the lead. The Wooster driver and his Weekly Electric, Wooster Glass and DJ Directional Services #63 would drive away from the field as the battle was on for second between Duncan and the young Moran as Berner, Donnie Moran, points leader Corey Conley, JR Gentry, Brad Malcuit, Russ King and George Lee were bunched together for a top five finish. Devin Moran squeezed past Duncan with seven laps to go to grab second. The elder Moran took fourth from Berner at the same time as Drown passed Duncan for the lead, but Donnie Moran would settle for fourth. Conley and Gentry were dueling for fifth but Gentry got loose in turn two and gave up a couple of places to Berner and King late in the race as Conley collected fifth place. Ryan Markham would win the last chance race.

The next racing action at NAPA Wayne County Speedway will be on Friday, July 5th with Mid Season Championships for the Fisher Performance Sprints, Lias Tire Late Models, Thrifty Muffler Super Stocks, NAPA Modifieds, WQKT Mini Stocks and the Mini Wedges.
