MARK PETTYJOHN VICTORIOUS IN ROBERTS MEMORIAL/BOWERS-DURHAM CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT



HAGERSTOWN, MD (August 10) - Mark Pettyjohn added another triumph to his resume on Saturday night, this time at Hagerstown Speedway when he posted the win of the 33rd Annual Ernie D’s Shorty Bowers Bull Durham Championship/ 48th Annual Johnny Roberts Memorial event sanctioned by the Three State Flyers on Manitowoc Employee Night for the Buchanan Auto Stores late models.

It was the career first Hagerstown win for the driver from Milton, DE and also his overall fourth Three State Flyers win this season.  In May, his brother Kenny won a Three State Flyers event which was also his career first at Hagerstown.

“I have to thank the Lord for blessing us with this win and keeping everybody safe,” Pettyjohn said. “Everything just worked out great; it just couldn’t have worked any better. The track was great. We didn’t have any cautions and that was good for us.  It’s just good to get this Hagerstown win under our belt.”



The Roberts Memorial ended being rained out in June when originally scheduled and was postponed and double titled with the Ernie’s Bowers/Durham Championship event.

Kevin Boyer of Frederick, MD ended as the winner in the Ernie D’s pure stocks when Brian Miller was disqualified following a post-race inspection with Gary Proctor of Big Pool, MD recording his fifth D&D Auto Recycling hobby stock feature of the season. Inwood, WV’s Richard Gwizdale grabbed the lead on a restart with two to go and won the National Speed Supply/Dave Padula Motorsports four cylinder feature while the 2nd Annual Bill Bollinger Classic Racing Series feature was won by Matt Wallace of Mt. Airy, MD.

Late model heats for the 27 entries were won by Jeremy Miller, who also turned the fast time of 19.236 seconds, Rick Eckert, Mark Pettyjohn while Glenn Elliott was the consolation winner. The top three from each heat chose young fans from the stands to draw their starting position as Eckert and Pettyjohn had the one and two pulled to occupy the front row. 

Pettyjohn outgunned Eckert on the start with Dan Stone and D.J.Myers next while Jason Covert quickly took fifth from Austin Hubbard and then fourth from Myers on the second lap.

Pettyjohn slowly began to pull away from Eckert and by the fifth lap was just over three seconds ahead and in another four laps, entered the rear of the field. He had two and sometimes three cars between himself and Eckert as Eckert slowly chopped away at the lead, closing to 1.31 seconds by lap 21 after Stone dropped out and Covert took up the chase in third. 

That was the closest Eckert got as the race remained under the green flag and Pettyjohn began to open the distance. With ten to go, he was still going through traffic and three seconds ahead.

With five to go, he waved good bye to his brother Kenny when he drove by and later had four lapped cars between himself and Eckert along with 4.373 seconds lead at the checkered.



“I heard Johnny Roberts was a great racer and I’m thankful and honored to win at the same track he won at and a lot of these guys, Gary Stuhler, my brother Kenny Pettyjohn, Nathan Durboraw, Rodney Franklin,” Pettyjohn said. “There are just so many good guys out there that have won here. I just feel like when you win here, you’ve done something special.”

The 35-lap non-stop feature was timed in 12.31 which destroyed the previous record of 15 minutes flat set by Nathan Durboraw in June 2002.

Hubbard got past Covert for third with four to go with David Williams ending fifth. Tyler Hershey, Myers, Miller, Lindsay Barton and Marvin Winters completed the top ten.

Brian Miller passed Dave Stouffer to lead the third lap of the pure stock feature and that race went non-stop following a pair of cautions to get the opening lap completed. Kevin Boyer came from 12th to take second on lap ten and ended up being awarded the win when Miller’s engine failed a post-race inspection. Stouffer was second with Mike Warrenfeltz, Danny Beaver and Darrin Younker rounding out the top five.  Boyer was also the Bill Ecton and Son Hard Charger.

The hobby stocks had two red flags in their event, the first on the opening lap when several cars tangled and Michael Hyatt ended into the end of the guardrail opening off turn four and another on lap five when William Crook lost a wheel and took a tumble in turn two.

Gary Proctor took the lead with Joe Rodgers chasing him the rest of the way and won by just over a length. Kenny Thomas was third and got the Kline Auto Body Lucky Seven award. Justin Hansberger and Matt Smith were next.

Frankie Gordon led the four cylinders from the outside pole until Kevin Thomas got by and led the sixth lap while previous two time winner Cody Kershner was coming from 12th and passed Gordon for second on the eighth lap.

Kershner led the 12th and 13th laps as Thomas and he swapped positions on the backstretch into the third turns as they made contact and both spun. 

Richard Gwizdale sped past Gordon on the restart to lead the two final laps and win by three lengths. Jeremy Ott was third followed by Ryan Laye and Mike Potts.

Matt Wallace began from the outside pole to lead Brandon Little on the start of the Bollinger Memorial event. The green flag remained out as Roland Brown moved past Little on the eighth lap and began to close on Wallace. A last lap charge from the final turns resulted in a near photo finish with Wallace claiming the win by inches. Joe Snodgrass was third followed by Kurt Welsh and Little.
