Dustin Neat Dandy in Rain-Shortened Harold Hardgrove Memorial at Lake Cumberland

by Michael Despain
BURNSIDE, KY (August 17) - Lake Cumberland Speedway presented the 5th Annual Harold Hardgrove Memorial on Saturday evening and Dustin Neat of Dunnville, KY would become the fifth different winner of the event by claiming the $3,000 payday after Mother Nature intervened and stopped the event with 23 of the scheduled 40 laps complete. The Modified and Sportsman features were rained out and will be ran on Saturday August 24.

With rain drops starting to fall from the sky, Dustin Neat would take the race lead at the drop of the green flag and immediately motor away, while Tommy Bailey and Tim Tungate settled into a battle for second. The first caution of the event waved for debris on lap 8 and when action resumed, Neat again would hold the point, while Bailey and Tungate would be joined by Terry English in a three-way battle for the second position. Neat would start working traffic and would almost meet his demise with a slower car on the frontchute on lap 19, but continued on, but this would allow Bailey to close in on Neat a bit. The next caution waved on lap 23 when Dennis Barton’s machine would slow on the frontchute. During this caution, the light showers of rain became more steadier and eventually the race would be stopped and Neat would be declared the winner of the race in the Danny and Gene Hatcher owned Roxanna Specialized Hauling/Hatcher Auto Sales/Kevin Ison Motorsports/Hatcher Properties sponsored #6 Barry Wright Race Car powered by a Vic Hill Race Engine. Tommy Bailey and Tim Tungate would be credited with the second and third positions, while Terry English and Steve Elliott would complete the top five. The remainder of the top ten would be Ben Petrey, Greg Hansford, Matt Henderson, Tony Kidwell, and Dennis Barton. Eighteen entries would see Michael Chilton as top qualifier, while heat wins went to Michael Erp, Bailey, and Neat.

The Modified division had fourteen entries and their feature event would be rained out and will be contested on August 24. Heat race winner earlier in the evening for the Modifieds were Tommy Gregory and Cameron Marlar. The ten Sportsman entries on hand would also see the rains postpone their main event until August 24 as well. Heat race winners for the Sportsman were Lee Branscum and Johnny King.
