Christine Jr. On a Roll at SSP with York County Nationals Victory on Saturday Night
NEWBERRYTOWN, PA (August 31) – Manchester’s Randy Christine Jr. won his third Late Model feature win in a row at the Susquehanna Speedway Park on Saturday night, August 31. Chambersburg’s Doug Bennett won the extra distance Street Stock race to claim his first win of the season. Travis Horan of Manchester claimed his second Xtreme Stock victory of the 2013 season. Maryland’s Bill Brown Jr. beat out Roland Brown by about a foot to win the action-packed Classic Car 20 lapper.
In Late Model action, Randy Christine Jr. had lady luck on his side all night long. On the special 32-lap York County Nationals, Christine drew number one at the beginning of the night to start him on the pole and then again drew number one for no invert after winning the first heat race. On the start, Christine Jr. jumped out to the early lead and set the pace with Grant Adams and Cam Zeigler in tow close behind. Just as the three cars would close in on lapped traffic to make the race really interesting, the caution flag would fly. A few more cautions scattered throughout the race allowed Christine to have clean air throughout the entire race. Christine claimed the victory by five car lengths over Adams and Zeigler. Sam Gallagher finished in fourth with Kyle Lear rounding out the top five. Chris Knopp was the JR’s Paving Hard Charger by finishing eight after starting in 23rd. Heat race wins went to John Moser Jr., Adams and Christine Jr.
The 20-lap Street Stock feature had Jim Plam Jr. leading lap one, Dan Zechman leading lap two and Doug Bennett taking the lead on lap three. Midway through the 25-lapper, Gary Potts moved into the runner-up spot to challenge Bennett. Lap after lap Potts tried to make the pass for the lead. Bennett never faltered and went on to edge out Potts by a car length at the finish. Scott Thunberg finished in third with Palm and Michael Kiehl rounding out the top five. Mike Walls, Randy Zechman and Kiehl were the heat race winners.
In the 20-lap Xtreme Stock Car nightcap, Dan Snyder took the early lead with Travis Horan moving by him on the second circuit. On lap three, Cameron Benyou took over the second place position and waitied for a mistake by Horan. As Bennett did earlier in the night, Horan never faltered and won the feature over Benyou and the Madison House Recovery Home Hard Charger Chad Stine who started in 11th to finish third. Donnie Broderick and John Frye finished fourth and fifth respectively. Johnny Palm and Snyder won their heat races earlier in the night.
The 20-lap Classic Cars came down to a photo-finish at the end with Bill Brown Jr. besting Roland Brown by inches at the line. Roland Brown led from lap nine until Bill Brown Jr. took the lead at the finish. Steve Cantwell finished in third with Pete Neal coming across the line in fourth. Charlie Summers rounded out the top five. Bill Brown Jr. and Cantwell were heat race winners.
