WEAVER TOPS LATE MODEL SPORTSMAN FIELD IN SMALL CAR NATIONALS, CORBIN, PROCTOR AND KERSHNER ALSO TAKE WINS

HAGERSTOWN, MD (September 14) – Winning the Hershey Racing Engine Dash for Cash and starting from the pole in the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman field for the Ledo Pizza 7th Annual Small Car Nationals at Hagerstown Speedway, Justin Weaver of nearby Williamsport was in a race of his own and after 30 laps, was 13.38 seconds ahead at the checkered for the $2,000 triumph, his third of the season. Just two weeks previously, Weaver received the season championship for the division.  

Other drivers ending with winning status were Winchester,VA’s Mike Corbin, who led all the way in the Ernie D’s pure stock feature after winning the Bill Ecton and Son Dash for Cash to also pick up $2,000.

The final $2,000 winner was Hagerstown’s Cody Kershner who took over the National Speed Supply/Dave Padula Motorsports four cylinder lead with five laps to go and won by five lengths, announcing that $1,000 of his winnings would be donated to Breast Cancer Awareness. Following his fourth win, his engine was also protested and found to be legal.

Gary Proctor of Big Pool, MD led all but the opening lap in the D &D Auto Recycling hobby stocks for his seventh triumph worth $500. He won by .648 seconds and also was the Kline’s Auto Body and Towing Lucky Seven winner. Rodney Hall was the 27th Annual Tommy Thompson Demo Derby winner.  

Weaver immediately was on the gas and beat Andy Anderson into the first turn with Mike Walls and Paul Cursey next in line and started through the rear of the field on the ninth lap. He never missed a beat and continued to hold a comfortable distance on Anderson and was only on lap 12 when both Denny Bonebrake and son Wes, both had mechanical issues and brought out the caution. .

Anderson was the next to roll to a stop following the restart which moved Walls into second for the restart.

Weaver took off and lap after lap kept stretching the distance over Walls, who was battling with his cousin, Rodney and Scott Palmer.

R. Walls took over the runner up spot on the 19th circuit but he couldn’t even see Weaver who was more than seven seconds ahead and again into rear traffic two laps later.

The race remained under green while Weaver continued all the way to the checkered and all but a half lap and five lapped cars ahead of Rodney Walls.

“I just have to thank the guys that give me an amazing piece every week,” Weaver said. “They back it up week in and week out. This thing is awesome to drive. It’s been a good year. We’re going to try and get a few more races yet.”

Rick Hulson got past Palmer for third with two to go while Mike Walls held on for fifth. Billy Farmer came from 11th to end sixth followed by Travis Stickley (12th), Billy Beachler, the Liberty Auto and Tire hard charger who came from 22nd, John Baker, (15th) and 18th starter, Curtin Heath. Heat winners were M. Walls, Anderson and Weaver with Paul Cursey the overall quickest in Friday’s time trials with a lap of 19.639.  

After winning the dash, Mike Corbin took off from the pole with Eric Johnson chasing him while Greg Diehl was coming from eighth and moved into second on lap six.

With several cautions, Corbin continued to held on while leading Diehl by four to six lengths and a final yellow with two to go where he pulled away to grab the checkered by .915 seconds over Diehl.

“They told me the 80 was coming on the outside so I moved up and don’t know if it helped me or I just blocked him,” Corbin said. “I had about 10 or 15 people around telling me to do that.”

Dave Keiser held to third with 2012 winner Mike Franklin and Brian Luttrell completing the top five. Chris Ebersole was the Bill Ecton and Son hard charger after starting 17th and ending sixth. Craig Parrill, Bill Henney, Johnson and Kevin Boyer completed the top ten. Brian Kerns, Keiser, Corbin, Terry Staton, Henney and Johnson were the heat winners with Bill Bowie taking the consolation. Mike Desch turned the fast time of 22.728 seconds for the pure stocks.

In the hobby stocks, Gary Proctor started sixth and found a hole between two cars and took the chance and charged through and into the lead where he never looked back, going interrupted for 17 laps before the first caution. Danny Holmes closed to three lengths at the halfway mark but Proctor went on to win by .53 seconds over Jamie Mills in a one lap dash.

“They just left enough room for me to squeeze in there and that’s what gave me the move for the lead,” Proctor said. “Once we’re out front, we’re pretty dominant with this car.” Holmes was third but disqualified for disallowing a post-race inspection of the top finishers. Bryan Neff moved to third with Kenny Thomas and Dylan Welsh completed the top five.

Kevin Thomas quickly grabbed the four cylinder lead from the outside pole with third starter, Richard Gwizdale taking second while Cody Kershner moved into third. Gwizdale went into the lead following a third lap restart as Thomas, Kershner, and Ryan Laye battled. Kershner sped past Gwizdale following a tenth lap restart with Gwizdale coming up lame the next circuit. Kershner continued on to take the win by five lengths over Thomas. John Stoll Jr., Scott McCartney and Gary Dehart were next.

“The first five laps, this thing was really fast, but I was getting held up a little bit,” Kershner said. “The car started going away toward the end but it came on and everything just worked out. This is the biggest win of my career. This is awesome.”
