MORAN, MOREHOUSE & HENSEL JR. BIG WINNERS OF HILLTOP SPEEDWAY’S ‘WEEK-END ON THE HILL’
by Mike Swanger MILLERSBURG, OHIO (September 29) - The biggest Week-end on the Hill at Hilltop Speedway is now in the record books as eight class’ of cars competed over the two day show. The Late Models, Renegade of Dirt Modifieds and the Mini Stocks did their qualifying, heat races and dash’s on Saturday with the last chance and features on Sunday. Rick Aukland would be the fast qualifier as George Lee, Jason Flory, Norm Aronhalt and Dave Hornikel would lead the way in the heat races as Dresden’s Devin Moran would win the dash to start on the pole of the 40 lap feature. Outside polesitter Ty Myers would challenge the Custom Cutters and Donnie Moran Racing #99m of Moran for the opening two laps of the feature as Moran would open up a small advantage as Myers and Aukland would battle back and forth all race long for second. The Carpenter boys would run fourth and fifth until lap 29 when Tyler Carpenter suffered a flat tire and retired to the pits as Freddie Carpenter held on to fourth. During the first 29 circuits, the fans were watching JR Gentry and Doug Drown work their way through the field as they both had won a last chance race and had started 15th and 16th respectively. In the last ten laps, Moran would pull away and pick up his first win this year and the $4,000 payday along with his fourth victory all time at Hilltop. Aukland would hold off Myers for second and Freddie Carpenter edged out Gentry by a nose for fourth as Drown, Steve Prince, Brad Malcuit, Lee, and Wayne Maffett Jr. filled out the top ten.
The Renegades of Dirt Modifieds would have their final points race and a 40 lap, $4,000 to win show with Rick Aukland being the quick timer again and then clinch the championship by winning his heat race. Kevin Morehouse, Nick Hoffman and Doug Drown would also post heat wins with Morehouse capturing the dash. Kyle Strickler and Anthony Kinkade topped the last chance races. Morehouse would lead all the way although Drown made a slide job in turn four on lap 16 but could not make it stick and ended up losing to place to Hoffman and Aukland. On the last lap Hoffman pulled alongside Morehouse but slammed the turn two wall hard and ending his chance for the win. For Morehouse, it was his 4th win at Hilltop this season and his 39th all time and his third straight Week-end on the Hill victory at the Holmes County speedplant.
The Mini Stocks would be chasing after a $1,000 to win 30 lap feature with Wooster’s Gary Hensel Jr. popping into the lead from the outside front row and lead all the way with Jordan James and dash winner Terry Adkins right on his tail. The last three laps would see James try a different line but could not get past his team car of Hensel Jr. as he would go to victory lane for the second time this year aboard the Lochevale Farms, Thompson’s Garage and E.A. Constuction #28h and his fifth all time at Hilltop. Jerry Adkins made a late run to grab fourth as 17th starting Derek Penley got past a fading Moose Workman for fifth with two laps to go. Workman and Don Rufener III won the heat races as Brad Hensel won the last chance race. Penley was disqualified from being the fast qualifier after having an illegal tire on so that award went to Chris Priebe.
Driving the 99x, Jackson’s Steve Cruse went flag to flag to win the Outlaw Mini Stock main for the third time in four years. John Schooler was running second until he caused a caution on lap 6 and giving second place to Don Rufener Jr. and he would hold off Schooler in the last two laps for second as Kyle Moyer recorded a fourth place finish with Scott Henry claiming fifth. Schooler and Cruse scored the heat wins.
Zanesville’s Tracy Fritter held off early challenges from Kenny Meadows and then drive away to secure his third Mod Lite win of the season aboard the #59 machine. Meadows kept Anthony Kinkade at bay to finish second while Doug Stanley slipped past Brian Stuhldreher with four laps to go for fourth. Fritter, Meadows and Kinkade paced the heats.
Phil Bubeck, Braxton Wilson and Cody Anderson won the heats of the Mini Wedges as Bubeck and Wilson would duel for the lead at the start of their feature but Weirton’s WV Bubeck would scoot to his third victory of the season as last chance winner Eva Knight picked her way through the field to take second. Dalton Anderson finished third with Cody Anderson and Wilson filling out the top five.
In Saturday’s action, Mansfield’s Kyle Moore and the Char’s Cars and Met’s Machine Shop #21d lead all the way for his second Street Stock win of 2013. Numerous cautions kept the field bunched together as pole sitter Kyle Dickinson broke on the second lap as he challenged Moore for the lead. Scott Wolford would pester Moore for the rest of the race but never could swipe the lead away. Mitch Caskey finished third with Tim Penley and Rob Parker rounding out the top five. Dickinson, Moore, Caskey and Wolford posted the heat wins as Matt Shroyer picked up the last chance win.
Travis Winterringer set the pace for the opening lap of the Truck feature but after that it was Galena’s Rolly Heyder taking over. Heyder and his Jack Maxton Chevrolet and Nichols Towing #10 would be closely followed by Bill Keeler and on the last lap as they encountered lapped traffic, Keller momentarily moved in front of Heyder but as they sped down the backstretch, Heyder reclaimed the lead and post his fourth win of the season. Keeler was chased across the finish line by Cole Lillibridge, Mike Sawmiller and Danny Kelly. Heat winners were Winterringer and Keeler.
