Bagley Wins One For The Team at Texas Motor Speedway by Bryan Wimberley
FORT WORTH, Tex. (March 8) - If there was ever a feel good story to begin the year, then what transpired in the 40-lap feature at Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track on Saturday night, exemplified exactly that.
Having a terrible start to his weekend, Morgan Bagley of Longview, Tex., smacked his teammate, Zach McMillan of Kilgore, in an inescapable mishap Thursday night, in a practice session. When McMillan spun out, it left Bagley with nowhere to go, creating massive right side damage to the 14M car in the accident. The crew hustled back to their headquarters, nearly a five-hour round trip, to piece the hot rod back together and beating the clock to return on race day.
Once back in Bagley's hands, the 2011 P&W Sales Southern United Professional Racing Series' Champion took care of the rest, rewarding the Team 14 crew with a win for their hard work, that included a $3,500 payday, plus a cowboy hat trophy and an extra $500 in racing products (by J&J Motorsports). Bagley celebrated his 8th career SUPR victory and has went back-to-back in winning the series' finale at LoneStar to end 2013.
Chris Brown of Spring, Tex., didn't go quietly and even traded for the lead on lap 13, before Bagley shot back by on lap 26 -Brown would ultimately settling for 2nd-place, some 2.8 seconds behind the winner.
Seven-starting Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Ia., had a strong showing, taking his No. 19R to a three-wide battle for the lead with Brown and Bagley, soon after a lap 24 restart. Gustin had some right rear cosmetic damage, possibly hampering his late-race progress with a tire rub, but he still managed to complete the podium.
Jon Mitchell of Texarkana, Tex., was one of the consistently fastest drivers all weekend during timing, locking up a fourth-place result, heading into a birthday weekend at The Pelican next week.
Busy driver, Rodney Sanders of Happy, Tex., completed an amazing weekend, grabbing three top 5's between all classes ran at TMS. Sanders would sub for Jason Krohn of Slayton, Minn., in his No. 7k Late Model, posting up fifth. Sanders won the 30-lap Limited Modified feature and also was third in the Modified division.
NOTES: Bagley's Rocket Chassis Race Car is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by P&W Sales MFG, Keyser Manufacturing Company, GottaRace, MSI, RE Racing Consultants and P&W Iron Works.
The feature ended at 11:04 pm and was slowed by two cautions, with seven cars on the lead lap.
The feature's top 10 hard charger of the race was last year's TWDTC winner, Shane Hebert of Lafayette, La., borrowing a ride for a provisional start -the No. B52 of Brandon Hightower. Hebert took the brand new loaner Rocket from 21st-starting position to finish eighth. Hebert flipped his Pierce Race Car in an earlier preliminary accident.
Troy Taylor of Midlothian, Tex., was another honorable mention among biggest movers, going from 16th-to-ninth.
The P&W Sales SUPR Dirt Late Models will be off for a month and will next return to action on April 12th at its home track of Baton Rouge Raceway in Baker (LA).
