Heyder Picks up Bugs-R-Gone Truck Special; Bates Breaks Record

by Jessica Mardis
MILLERSBURG, OH (May 24) - With their largest car count thus far this season with 122, Saturday night was filled with non-stop racing, as eight different divisions were in action on the Hill. The night’s agenda included autograph night for the fans allowing them to meet their favorite drivers as well as the Bugs-R-Gone truck special.

Rolling out first for the night were the Bugs-R-Gone trucks with a field of 16. Heat race one win went to Cole Lillibridge, heat two Kevin Potts and heat three winner was John Large. Bringing the field to the green for their $500 to win special was Cole Lillibridge who would also jump out front early. However, as a three-way battle ensued for top spot with Lillibridge, Kevin Potts and Roley Heyder the caution would fly with Lillibridge going in for a tire change and putting Heyder in the top spot. After a caution by John Large in turn one and two, Potts also went in to change a tire, placing both drivers to the tail for the restart and moving Jerry Gardner to the second spot. As the green dropped for the final restart, it was Roley Heyder picking up the $500 Bugs-R-Gone special followed by Jerry Gardner, Tom Garlic, Dwayne Powell, and Travis Winterringer.

The JPR Auto & Tire, Winning Edge and A & B Roofing and Construction Mini Wedges had a field of 14 with Destinie Bates and Landon Anderson picking up each of the heat races and setting the pole for the feature event. Taking the lead was Anderson as Bates and Taylor Huggins battled it out for second. With Bates pulling away from Huggins and gaining on Anderson, the “Throttle Monster” Destinie Bates would go on to pick up her fourth feature win this season and break the previous record for all time feature wins in the mini wedge division held by Blake Morris.

With a 6-car field it was Samantha St. John leading the field to the start of the Novice Mini Stock feature event. Jumping to the lead as well as picking up the win from outside pole was Colten Priebe followed by Colten St. John, John Maki, Samantha St. John, and Dustin Camp.

There were 23 Holmes Tire Late Models in action on the Hill with fast qualifier going to “The General” George Lee with a time of 14.592. Heat race winners were Mike Basich and Mike Lonas with the dash win going to Rick Mardis. In the last chance conciliation race it was Johnny Vandale pickin up the win.

Coming to the green it was Rick Mardis setting pace with “Chargin” Charlie Duncan sitting outside pole.  Out to the lead was Duncan as “The General” George Lee was making his way through the field to second. The battle for top spot continued as the two navigated their way through lap traffic. With Lee taking over top spot, the battle for second between Duncan and Mike Basich began. Passing Duncan on the last lap and picking up second was Basich, while fourth went to Mike Lonas, and fifth to Todd Brennen.

The action continued as the Barnes Performance Unlimited Modifieds rolled onto the track with a 16-car field. Picking up fast qualifier was Chris Basich with a time of 15.888. Hilton Eppley picked up the win in heat one with heat two going to Randy Harris and the dash going to Chris Basich.

After a few failed attempts to go green and with top runner Norm Aronhalt, as well, Rory Reed heading to the pits before the first lap was in the books, Chris Basich was able to lead the field to the start. Jumping out front early was Basich with “Rockin” Robin Duston in pursuit for the top spot. As the battle continued, coming up on lap traffic, the caution came out bunching the field back up and allowing Scott Peltz to make a charge at second. Holding on to the lead and picking up his third straight win was Basich, followed by Robin Duston, Scott Peltz, Denny Benjamin, and Hilton Eppley.

The Barnes Performance Unlimited Mini Stocks had a field of 17 with Michael Rose and Jason St. John picking up each of the heat race wins and setting the front row for the night’s feature event. Leading the field down the back stretch to the green was Rose, setting pace, he would go on to take the lead as well as the win. Jason St. John picked up second, while third went to Kevin Markey, fourth to Gary Hensel Jr. and fifth to Jordan James.

Making a third trip back to Hilltop Speedway this season was the modlites with a 10-car field. Heat race one went to Nick Crider and heat two went to Branden Shaw. With Crider setting the pace and leading the field to the green, he jumped out to the lead and that was were here would remain going on to pick up the win. Crider was followed by Doug Stanley, Joe Sisk, Wayne Kintz, and Josh Crider.

Given the dominance of Brad Moore in recent weeks in the Holmes Pest Control Street Stocks, a $100 bounty was placed on him for anyone that could take that feature win, of which 19 other cars had the opportunity. Picking up the heat race wins were Matt Shroyer, Brad Moore, and Dave Potts, placing Shroyer and Moore front row. As the green dropped, it was Brad Moore out front. However, Shroyer was not letting up challenging and trying to find a way to the front. Making his way through the field and putting pressure for second on Shroyer was Kyle Moore who eventually took over second. With a caution out and bunching the field back up, Kyle was looking for a way around his brother but as the checkered dropped it was Brad Moore demonstrating again his ability to get around the track and pick up the win. Rounding out the top five was Matt Shroyer, John Wilson, and Dave Potts.
