DROWN, MICHAELS, D. HENSEL, TEETERS, & EVANS SCORE 1st NAPA WAYNE COUNTY SPEEDWAY WINS
by Mike Swanger ORRVILLE, OH (July 4) -Friday night was the 1st of two nights of racing on the 4th of July week-end as Doug Drown and Rich Michaels Jr. won their features that will give them a spot in Saturday’s big money features. Brad Malcuit and Mark Banal would start the Lias Tire Late Model feature on the front row with Malcuit grabbing the lead for the opening two laps before fifth starting Keith Berner would take over as JR Gentry, who started 7th was right behind Berner. Wooster’s Doug Drown would get by Malcuit for third on lap seven and make it a three way battle for the lead. A lap 14 caution slowed things down but when the green flag flew again, Drown edged past Gentry for second and two laps later, the fast qualifier would move his Wheeling Auto Body, Wooster Glass and DJ Directional Services #20 past Berner for the lead and drive on to his 1st win at NAPA Wayne County Speedway. The win gives Drown a spot in Saturday’s Don Gross Memorial that will pay the winner $4,000 for the Late Models. Berner, Gentry and Malcuit followed as David Liles ran the last ten laps in the fifth spot for a top five finish. Berner and Shane McLoughlin topped the heats.
The Modifieds signed in for the nights action as they were getting dialed in for Saturday’s Renegades of Dirt Modified Tour that will pay $3,000 to win. Rich Michaels Jr of Ischua NY was dialed in good as he started on the pole and led all the way to pick up the win and earn a spot in Saturday’s feature. Driving the Genesis Racing Shocks, Reflections Hair Design and Xtreme Chassis #17x Michaels had an early challenge from Nathan Loney and fast qualifier Taylor Cook. Those two would spin through turn four on lap three and both kept going and losing ten positions in the process and that allowed Travis Dickson into second as he and Derrick Ramey would duel for second as Michaels strengthen his lead. Ramey took over second just past the halfway mark but could not chase down the winner Dickson held on to third as Jon Sluka ran fourth followed by Scott Stiffler. Winning the heat races were Michaels, Loney and Jeff Johnson.
After a rough start to the 2014 season, Mansfielder Bob Daugherty has turned his year around as he took the lead from Jeremy Lynch on the second circuit and then parked his KA Recovery, Char’s Cars and Metz Machine Shop #21d in victory lane for the third time this year in the Thrifty Muffler Super Stock feature. Nick Smith made a run at Daugherty on the restart following a lap 12 caution but came up short. Chase Alexander and Lynch battled back and forth for third with Alexander winning that war as Mark Thompson edged past Lynch with two laps to go to finish fourth. Daugherty, who was the quick timer, and Smith won the heats.
Heat winners Doug and Brad Hensel brought the WQKT Mini Stocks to the greeen flag with Doug and his #18 taking control of the race. Jerry Adkins set right behind D. Hensel and kept the pressure on but never could get the lead away. Moose Workman would finish thirs with Brad Hensel and Mitch Reichard filling out the top five.
Jeff Teeters and Nick Crider went back and forth for the first four laps of the Mod Lite feature before Teeters of North Jackson, would pull away and claim the checkered flag aboard the Leaders#1. Crider would finish second as Kenny Meadows held off Doug Stanley for third with Chris Logan Rounding out the top five. Logan and Teeters notched the heat wins.
Hauling all the way up from Mineral Wells W.Va, Coleman Evans led all the way to win the NAPA Mini Wedge main. Driving the Evans Construction #17c, Evans had to wait through several cautions for the win as Billy Dawson, Braxton Wilson and Matthew Moore had to come back through the field to finish in that order with Caitlin Johnson filling out the top five. Dawson and Johnson scored the heat wins.
Drivers were also competing for over $2,000 in awards from the Contingency Connection program.
Saturday, July 5th’s program will start racing at 7 pm and feature the UNOH All Star Sprints for $5,000 to win the Duffy Smith Memorial plus the Elite 8 Late Models will be involved in the Don Gross Memorial that will pay the winner $4,000 and the Renegade of Dirt Modifieds with a 30 lap, $3,000 to win feature plus the Thrifty Muffler Super Stocks also racing.
