Metheny scores biggest career victory

Elkins PR
KERENS, WV (August 1) - After two weeks of rain, Mother Nature let Elkins Raceway get the Budweiser FASTRAK Late Models special in the books. Plus, Buffalo Wild Wings presented autograph and picture night.

23 Budweiser FASTRAK Late Models signed to battle for $2,000 to win with $200 to start. Cody Rogers, Charlie George (driving the 38 owned by Mike Ball), and Joel Prosser scored the prelims. When the green flag fell, George, Jamie McCloud, Rogers, Prosser, and Corey Metheny filled the top five. On lap four, George pushed in turn four allowing McCloud to slip by for the lead. After a caution on lap six, Metheny, riding in third, motored his way to second on lap 11. McCloud continued to show the way, but Metheny chased him down and pulled even by lap 16. On the next go round Metheny succored the spot. Metheny was now in command with stoppages on laps 19 and 23. On the restart of lap 23, Shawn Jett, Rogers and Prosser made contact in turns one and two, resulting in Prosser overturning on his roof. Rogers stopped, but Jett did not. When the 25 lapper was through, Metheny driving the Small Town Reality / Keplinger Welding #11C scored his biggest career victory. McCloud, Jett (from tenth), Kris Southern and Michael Lake completed the top five.

In the Jenkins Ford Super Late Models, after Chuck Harper and Shane Hitt grabbed heat wins, Harper set sail in the feature. By lap 10 Harper had built a full straight away cushion. The only thing that slowed Harper was the yellow on lap 11. It was the J C Distributing / J Rods Vending #00H first trip to victory circle since July 6, 2012. The "Beverly Gearjammer" also received a 2 1/2 ton floor jack courtesy of Auto Zone of Elkins. Cody Hardesty, Hitt, Tim Senic, and Steve Wilmoth followed Harper across the stripe.

Although there was a good battle for teh second spot in the Fast 'N Friendly Pharmacy Modifieds between Mike Murphy and Phill Jeffries, The front spot left no doubt. Notching his third checkerboard, Brent Trimble piloting the "In Memory of Grandma" / H & R Block #1B, lead flag to flag. Murphy was able to hold off Jeffries for second. Robert Smith was fourth and Matthew Chenoweth was fifth.

Scott Bittinger took the point of the Miller's Used Cars Street Stock feature and looked poised to claim his fifth checkered flag. The laps clicked off with no challenge to Bittinger, but eyes turned to Brian Mitchell. Mitchell started fourteenth and began to move his way to the front. By lap seven he was in fourth.  Mitchell then climbed to second by lap 12. A yellow on lap 12, bunched the field up, and put Mitchell on Bittinger's deck lid. When the race resumed, exiting turn two, Bittinger's "Gold Digger" lurched. Something in the rear end let go, ending his quest and handing the lead to Mitchell. Mitchell in the Wizard Race Cars / Performance Engineering #M1 claimed his third win. Just as he took the checkers, he had mechanical problems under the hood, requiring assistance to get out of the pit entrance. Ryan Watson (from tenth), John Tallman Jr., Jamie Keene and Anthony Arbogast were second through fifth.

In the High Lines Oversize Load Escorting Mod Lites, D Jay Miller lead wire to wire enroute to his third checkerboard driving the Newlon International #52. Team Mate and car owner Beau Newlon finished second. Mitch Ward, Matt Ward and Ryan Harris filled out the top five.

The Darren's Pizza Shack Mini Wedges put on a whale of a show. The top three karts darted in and around slower traffic just like the 'big boys / girls" do. When the dust cleared, Paije Bragg notched her sixth win. Kolbe Kimbrew finished second, and Abby Watson was third. After the race there was some question on scoring, the rest of the results are pending.

This week at the Elkins Raceway, Friday Night Thunder is being presented by High Lines Oversize Escorting and A C Electronics.
