Covert Completes Weekend Sweep With Saturday Winchester Score Palmer and DeHaven Split Twin LLM Mains
by Doug Watson Winchester, VA (August 9) - York Haven Pa.'s Jason Covert wired the field to collect his first Late Model feature win of the season in last Saturday nights 35-lap Lee Stultz memorial at Winchester at Winchester speedway. The win for Covert, worth $3000, made him the 10th-different Late Model winner at the track this season and completed a weekend sweep that saw Covert win Friday's Late Model event at Maryland's Potomac speedway.
Dale Hollidge and Jason Covert shared the front-row for the start of the event with Covert surging into the race lead as the pack raced off turn-two. Covert clearly had the car to beat as he would go on to lead all 35-circuits aboard his Cameron/Mann owned Rocket no.72 in a race that went green to checker in just 10 minutes and 25 seconds. Eventual runner-up Dale Hollidge kept Covert in his sights but was unable to gain on the leader and would have to settle for runner-up money for the second night in a row. "Man this car was awesome tonight." A jubilant Covert stated during his post-race interview. "We've been good here all season but just haven't been able to get one." Said Covert "To win here tonight and Potomac last night, I just don't know what to say, all the credit go's to Pete, Roland and all the people who help with this deal, this is truly a team effort." With the Outlaw's coming to town next weekend Covert was asked what he learned from his sterling weekend performance's. "I learned you have to start up front if you're going to beat the Outlaw's." Covert said jokingly. "To win with the Outlaw's you have to qualify well and put yourself in a position to win, they're the best for a reason, but I feel with this team we can run with them. I'm excited." Dominic DeFino produced his career-best Winchester finish taking third, former Outlaw champion Rick Eckert was fourth with Keith Jackson rounding out the top-five. Heats for the 22 cars on hand went to Eckert, Jackson and Allan Brannon.
Defending track champion Jonathon DeHaven and point leader Scott Palmer each scored their respective third Winchester feature wins of the season in the two Limited Late Model events contested. Palmers win came in the make-up event from a July 26 rain-out that saw him start on the pole and lead all 20-laps to post the win. Jonathon DeHaven came from 9th to finish second, 12th starting Brad Ritter was third, Brian Wright took fourth with Jeremy Coffey completing the top-five. In the regularly scheduled 20-lapper Jonathon DeHaven, who lined-up fourth, took the lead fro Brian Wright on lap-11 and then held-off a pesky Brad Ritter over the final 9-circuits to secure the win. Jeremy Coffey was third, Kevin Deremer took fourth with James Lichliter filling the front-five. Heats for the 25-car field went to Coffey, Wright and Tyler Horst.
Current point leader Mike Franklin drove an inspired race to collect his 7th win of the season in the 15-lap Pure Stock feature. After an early race tangle sent him to the rear of the field, Franklin rallied back to take the race lead from Craig Parrill on lap-13 and would then hold-off a persistent Parrill over the final 2-circuits to collect the win. Mike Bennett would take third, Josh Wilkins was fourth with Keith Koontz rounding out the top-five. Heats went to Franklin and Jerry Jenkins Jr.
Justin Hottle continued his domination of the Four-Cylinder ranks as he sped to his 9th win of the season in the divisions 15-lap main. Hottle, who started scratch on the field, took the race lead from Lester Riley on lap-8 and would run-off from the remainder of the field to score the win. Riley held on for second, Cody Kershner was third, Greg Gunter collected fourth with Roger Whitlock taking fifth.
Defending track champion Mark Vegh scored his second win of the season in the 15-lap Enduro Stock feature. Vegh, who started second, took the lead on lap-one and never looked back as he took the win by a wide margin over Dustin Proctor. James Gray was third, point leader "Krazy" Kenny Thomas took fourth with Danny Holmes completing the top-five.
