Lonas Picks up Street Stock Win; Moran Continues Dominance
by Jessica Mardis MILLERSBURG, OH (August 9) - With Mother Nature deciding to cooperate, racing action was back underway on the Hill for kids’ night and the last regular race of the season before next week’s season championships.
The first division to roll on to the track was the Holmes Pest Control Street Stocks with a field of eighteen. Picking up heat race wins was Todd Swim, Eric Dixon, and Mike Lonas setting the field for the night’s 15-lap feature event.
Bringing the field to the start was Swim and Dixon. After multiple cautions, racing was back under way. Taking over the top spot and going on to pick up his first feature win at Hilltop Speedway this season was Mike Lonas. Working their way through the field from sixth and ninth place starting positions to finish second and third was Gary Hensel Jr. and Kyle Moore. Fourth went to Dave Potts and fifth to Todd Swim.
The JPR Auto & Tire, Winning Edge and A & B Roofing and Construction Mini Wedges had a total field of twenty-five, thirteen on the small track and twelve on the big track. On the small track, Braxton Wilson and Corbin Adkins each picked up heat wins, while Justin Jessop and Destinie Bates claimed heat wins on the big track.
The small track wedges were first to run their feature with Braxton Wilson and Levi Bowen setting on the front row. Out front early was Wilson, who would continue to pull away from the rest of the field leading every lap and picking up yet another feature win for the season. Rounding out the top five was Levi Bowen, Zoe Stafford, Corbin Adkins, and Donnie Danley. Next out was the big track wedges with Justin Jessop and Destinie Bates leading the field to the start. Jumping out front and going on to take the checkered was “The Throttle Monster” Bates, followed by Chase Settles, Justin Jessop, Aiden Fritter, and Jamie Bright.
The Holmes Tire Late Models had a field of 19 with Mike Basich setting fast time with a 14.461. Heat race winners were Mike Lonas and Keith Tish, while the dash win went to Devin Moran placing him on the pole of the 25-lap feature.
Setting the pace to the green, Moran would jump out front and that is where he would remain continuing his unbeaten reign at the hill, picking up his sixth win in six appearances. Second went to Dave Hornikel, third to George Lee, fourth to Mike Basich, and fifth to Ty Myers.
The Modified division had a field of twenty-six, with “The General” George Lee setting fast time with a 15.838. Picking up heat race wins were Jess Hartman, DJ Cline, Norman Aronhalt with the dash win going to Jesse Wisecarver and the last chance race going to Matt Samples.
With the field set, it was “The Outlaw” Jesse Wisecarver and Jimmy Smith sitting on the front row. As the green dropped it was Wisecarver taking control of the top spot, increasing his lead over the field with every passing lap. “The Outlaw” would go on to pick up his fourth feature win of the season followed by Robin Duston, Chris Basich, DJ Cline, and Jimmy Smith.
Eighteen cars made up the Mini Stock division with Blaine Markey, Moose Workman, and Michael Rose all picking up heat race wins. With Markey leading the field to the green, he would jump out front, fending off Parson and St. John, to pick up his second feature win at the Hill. Second went to Billy Parson, third to Jason St. John, fourth to Brett Mellor, and fifth to Michael Workman.
The Modlites had a field of seven with Tyler Frankenberry picking up the only heat race win placing him on the pole for the feature event. As the field came to the green, it was Frankenberry out front. Challenging for the lead was Tracy Fritter, however, was unable to capitalize as Tyler Frankenberry would pick up the win. Third went to Brian Stuhldreher, fourth Joey Sisk and rounding out the top five was Kyle Morehouse.
The Bugs-R-Gone Trucks had a field of twelve with Jerry Gardner picking up heat one and Cole Lillibridge picking up heat two, making up the front row of the feature. Unfortunately, issues forced Lillibridge to the pits moving Rolly Heyder to the outside for the start of the race. With the green out, Heyder would take the lead maintain position to the checkered picking up his fifth feature win. Jerry Gardner was second, Travis Winterringer third, Jim Large fourth and Joey Heyder fifth.
Rounding out the night’s events were the Novice mini stocks with a 4-car field. With the drop of the green, it was Colten St. John taking the top spot and going on to pick up the win. Rounding out the field was Dustin Camp, Samantha St. John, and John Maki.
