Oldfield Dominates in the West Australian Late Model Championship
COLLIE, W.A. (February 21) - Jamie Oldfield last night was the class of the field as he raced away in the thirty lap final to claim a dominating win in the West Australian Late Model Championship, his first win in the event.
Oldfield started from pole alongside the impressive Matt Goodlad and raced away from the field at every opportunity, so much so that even when in lapped traffic his lead continued to increase slightly. He would go on to cross the line some eight and a half seconds ahead of Matt Goodlad and third placed Brad Blake.
The thirty lap feature began with Jamie immediately pulling out in front of Goodlad and Blake. The first yellows of the race came out on lap three when Lee Watt came to a stop, bunching up the field once more. Jamie would lead away again and built his lead so that he was quickly closing in on lapped traffic. However, just as he was approaching lapped traffic on lap seven, Jeremy Hale spun, Oldfield lucky to avoid it, and the yellows were bought on again.

Straight away Oldfield left the rest of the field for dust on the next start, again racing his way up to lapped traffic, but for the third time before he could actually start to lap cars, the yellows came on yet again, this time for Jeremy Hale who had gone into the wall after contact with Bryn Haythornthwaite.
Two laps later it was yellow lights again, this time after some back markers came together with a domino effect seeing Nat Muir spin. This would however be the last stoppage and Jamie would use it to his advantage, racing away once more while well behind him Goodlad and Blake were having a great battle, Blake showing his nose to Goodlad lap after lap but unable to actually get past.
Oldfield finally got into lapped traffic on lap seventeen, but it didn’t seem to faze him, his lead getting bigger as he lapped up to tenth place. He crossed the line in first and for the first time in his career claimed a Late Model title to add to his numerous titles in other divisions. Goodlad came in second while Blake once again finished on the podium of the State Title race.
Earlier in the night the heat racing was intense, with the opening heat in particular almost seeing the drivers racing for sheep stations. The first start saw Phil Zuidema spin in turn four, with Ryan Halliday sent rear as the primary cause. Next a number of cars were battling for position, with two cars making contact and getting crossed up in front of the pack which left Jamie Moon in the front straight wall and Zuidema spinning infield.
The next start saw Jamie Oldfield finally get past Lee Watt for the lead, then a lap or so later Jason Oldfield and Craig Vosbergen made contact, ending with Jason going for a huge ride upside down, landing on his roof after at least two complete rolls, destroying his car and ending his night. He emerged from the car shaken but unhurt, with Vosbergen sent to the rear for the incident. Jamie Oldfield raced away and claimed the heat win from there.

By comparison the second heat was quiet, with just one stoppage after a few cars tangled, leaving one car spun out. In the end it was Marc Giancola who started his title defense in the best possible way, claiming the win from Warren Oldfield and Brad Blake.
Heat three saw Dean King make contact with Jay Cardy’s left rear at the start, both lucky to continue on. Brad Blake was quick to make his presence felt as he worked his way through the field while behind him Jamie and Warren Oldfield did the same, but it was all too easy for Craig Vosbergen to claim the win after starting on pole position. The final heat was relatively incident free, with Matt Goodlad recording a good win.
The A Dash saw Jamie Oldfield use the outside line to perfection to grab the win while Brad Blake executed a perfect pass in the final corner to claim third behind Goodlad. The B Dash had a number of stoppages, with Zuidema and Muir the first to spin and bring out the yellows. Debris bought out the yellows the second time, then another spun car made it three yellow light stoppages. Lee Watt was the man who led most of the distance until the last lap when he suddenly slowed, allowing the rest of the field to pass him: Ryan Halliday going on to take the lead.
The Late Models will now take a few weeks break before they return to the QUIT Bunbury Speedway on the 21st of March for the final round of their Track Championship!
