DROWN DRIVES TO 4TH WCS WIN; SMITH, DELANEY & DAWSON KEEP WINNING; TWO IN A ROW FOR WORKMAN

by Mike Swanger
ORRVILLE, OH (July 18) - It was the hottest night of the season on Malcuit Tavern Night as the Lias Tire Super Late Models were in the spotlight for the second race of the Wayne County Speedway/ Attica Raceway Park Late Model Series. Rain has claimed two of the races (May 9 @ WCS & Friday @ ARP) and the two that have been raced has now been won by Wooster’s Doug Drown. By the luck of the draw, the two heat winners of Drown and Ryan Markham drew the #1 and 2 pills to start on the front row of the 25 lap event. On the drop of the green flag, Markham popped into the lead with Drown on his tail as they drew away from the rest of the field. A tight battle for third was going on though as Brad Malcuit, Matt Irey and JR Gentry were wheeling and dealing for that position. Coming out of turn two on lap ten, and a back marker in the way, Drown went to the low side and Markham went to the high side of the slower car and as they went into turn three, Markham jumped the cushion to slow him just enough to allow Drown and his Hall’s Auto Sales, Car Konnection and Nationwide Vehicle Protection #240 to slip into the lead. Right as the 1/2 way mark was reached, the red flag came out for Josh Haynes’ car that caught fire in turn four. With the green flag back out, Markham, the defending WCS/ARP champion, tried a couple of different moves to reclaim the lead but Drown would hold him off as Malcuit was doing the same with Irey for third as Gentry would drop out of the race with six circuits to go in the battle for third. As the checkered flag waved, Drown had a five car length lead on Markham with Malcuit taking third with Irey fourth. Mike Bores finished fifth as Dave Hornikel came from starting 16th and grabbed a sixth place finish.

Paul McVicker and Brandon Gardner would lead the Aamco Transmission Super Stocks to the starting line with Gardner claiming the early lead with points leader and sixth starting Nick Smith pulling into second in less than one lap. A multi car pile up brought out the red flag as the field was working on lap two. David Uhler, Jim Nicely, Paul Whitten and Paul Kern all had their night ended from that wreck as Steve Ott would be able to go one more lap before he had to pull off. Back to action, heading down the backstretch on lap three, Smith would pull to the inside of Gardner going into turn three and come out of turn four with the lead. Smith and his Hillcrest Trucking, Fire & Ice Pub and Eicholtz Engines #11 would pull away from Gardner to collect his fourth win of the season as the Wooster driver also has three second place finishes in the seven races run. Tyler Thompson took third from McVicker at the halfway mark with Brandon Craver knocking McVicker back to fifth on the next lap. Gary Hensel Jr. would move into fifth the next time around. Following Smith at the finish line would be Gardner, Thompson with his third, third place finsh, Craver with his best finish of the year and Hensel Jr. with his fifth top five finish. Smith and Thompson topped the heat races.

Several cautions for spins and debris slowed the opening two laps of the WQKT Mini Stock feature. Shreve’s Michael ‘Moose’ Workman would start on the pole and once the race got into rhythm, would have to fight off Brad Hensel all race long before putting the JD Empire Trucking #41w into the winners circle for the second week in a row. Brad Hensel finished second for the third time while Stephen Crowe had his best finish of third. Mitch Reichard and Rick Bays rounded out the top five. Heat winners were Gary Hensel Jr. and Stephen Crowe.

Heat winner Matthew Moore set the pace for the opening three laps of the Mini Wedge feature but after that, Billy Dawson took over and the Lakeville youngster would park the DJ Directional Services, Amsoil and Harriger Towing #7b in victory circle for the fourth time. Logan Duncan, Moore and Jolene Voshel would fill out the finish.

Chuck Conway led the first five laps of the Flat Track Cart main but heat winner Scott Delaney was working his way to the front from his fifth starting position and took over the point on lap six and held off Jamie Johnson to score his fourth win of the year. Filling out the top five were Daryl Conkle, Colten Shaw, and Steve Reed.

The drivers went through the stands with their helmets during intermission and collected $650 for the Wardell family.

The Fisher Performance Sprints and the Harriger Towing Rush Late Models return with the the Lias Tire Super Late Models, the Aamco Transmission Super Stock, the WQKT Mini Stock and the Wedges amd Carts on the racing card for next Saturday Night. In two weeks, Saturday, August 1st, it will be Kid’s Night with a full racing program on tap. Go to www.waynecountyspeedway.com for all the latest news about the track.
