WILD NIGHT WITH THREE NEW VISITORS TO SENOIA RACEWAY VICTORY LANE

SENOIA, GA (August 1) - Senoia Raceway honored nearly a dozen ‘legends of racing’ on Saturday night while three current stars found their way into victory lane for the first time this season.  Newnan’s Scott Sherrer along with Monroe’s Rodney Peters and Alabama’s Marc Gooden picked up their first wins of the year at the 3/8ths mile clay bull ring.  Sherrer topped the Hobby Stock while Peters won the Crate Late Model feature and Gooden the B Cadet main event.

Other Saturday night checkered flag carriers were Senoia’s Joe Armistead, Jr. in the Super Late Models, Grantville’s Austin Horton in the Limited Late Models, Bo Chambers of Griffin in the four cylinders and Winford Minix of Senoia in the Bomber division.

The full moon shined brightly on the tough as nails raceway.  The moonbeams created the night’s first scary moment during Super Late Model hot laps when current points leader Clint ‘Cat Daddy’ Smith of Senoia snagged the dirt in turn three sending him into a wild barrel roll crash that ended with an end over end flip into the outside billboards.  Smith was not injured, but his race car was nearly destroyed.

The wild crashes continued in the B Cadet race.  LaGrange teenager Jake Traylor was in charge and looked to be on his way into victory lane for the first time since early May when he was caught up in lapped traffic on lap 16.  Traylor moved to the inside of the lapped car and touched the slower racer resulting in the young star spinning to the inside.  The unfortunate incident sent Traylor to the back of the lead lap cars handing the point position to Marc Gooden on the restart.

As the field went back to green, Traylor hustled to gain back spots lost forcing a three wide race out of the second turn.  Cars came together crashing with the worst being Villa Rica’s Brian Womack launching over the top of Bremen’s Drew Larson and rolling over once before landing on his wheels.

The caution caused the race to be checkered with Gooden claiming the victory over Newnan’s Parrish Duncan and Concord’s Cindy Anderson.  Traylor ended up fourth ahead of Johnny Stinchcomb of Newnan.

In the Hobby Stock feature, Scott Sherrer moved past an ailing Clyde Alexander of Locust Grove to take over the lead.  Seventeen-year-old Alexander led the first 14 laps of the race before developing mechanical problems that cost him the shot at the win.  Sherrer held off Senoia’s Dennis Lykins and Atlanta’s Josh Allen for his first win of the season.

Rodney Peters also notched his first checkered flag of the season besting current Crate Late Model points leader Bobby Mills of Griffin for the main event laurels.  Mills led the first three laps of the race before Peters worked past on the inside en route to the win.

Winford Minix won the race long battle with Monroe’s eighteen-year-old Clayton Callaway to win his fifth Bomber feature of the season.  Callaway challenged Minix several times with power moves to the inside that were close enough to rattle some drivers, but not the veteran Minix.  Mansfield’s Blake Harmon finished a season best third ahead of Alabama’s Paul Walters and Conyers Tim Harmon.

Joe Armistead, Jr., took over the points lead in the Super Late Models after winning the feature without Clint Smith able to take a green flag.  Armistead held off a mid-race charge by Oregon’s Rob Mayea that ended with Mayea’s power plant erupting in a ball flames on lap 18.  Armistead then held steady the rest of the way beating Fayetteville’s Ricky Williams, Waleska’s Luther Jenkins and Douglasville’s ‘Racin’ Mason Massey.  Brooks’ teenager ‘Magic’ Matt Dooley rounded out the first five finishers.

The season long duel between teenage sensations Austin Horton and Joey Armistead of Senoia looked to be continuing with the two young hot shoes starting the Limited Late Model feature on the front row.  Unfortunately, the drama ended early with Horton shooting out to the lead and then Armistead breaking on lap two.  Horton’s car was ‘on a rail’ the remainder of the way cruising to his and third straight victory and sixth win of the season.  Former track champion, Jason Williams of Locust Grove made his return to the track and finished in the runner-up spot ahead of two-time champion Glenn Morris of Fayetteville.  Villa Rica’s Shane Barrett finished with a season best fourth place finish while Brooks’ Jayce Southwell completed the top five.

Bo Chambers sliced into the points lead for the four cylinder division championship drive.  Chambers won for the first time since the first week of May by out running Newnan’s Russell Bright and Douglasville’s James Stansel.  Chambers nearest rival in the point standings, Robert Caldwell of Senoia, finished in fifth place behind Locust Grove’s Jamie Nicholson.

The Friends of the Dream 40 presented by Zen Windows is scheduled for this Saturday, August 8th.  The $3000 to win race for the Super Late Models will also feature upwards of $2000 in bonus lap money creating one of the biggest purse’s offered this season.  Seven other divisions will also be competing this weekend including the Limited Late Model, Crate Late Model, B Cadet, Hobby Stock, Mini Stock, Bomber and Legends Car.

The pit gates will open this Saturday at 4pm, grandstands at 5pm and hot laps will begin at 7pm and the night’s first race at 7:30pm.

Grandstand ticket prices are $15; ages 5-12 are $5; four and under are admitted for free.  Pit passes are available for $30; ages 5-12 are $15; four and under are admitted for free.
