SIMON LANDS WCS BOSS WIN; DROWN WINS 7th; HARBLE & HOLMES MAKE 1st VISIT TO VICTORY LANE; B. HENSEL, JOHNSON & DAWSON WINNERS AGAINby Mike Swanger
ORRVILLE, OH (August 8) - It was another action packed night at Wayne County Speedway on Southeastern Equipment night as the Mo Vaughn Transport BOSS non wing sprint cars were making their only appearance of the season at the track. Pole sitter Mike Miller would lead the 21 car field to the green flag and lead the opening two laps when the red flag waved for Randy Fink as he and Chuck Wilson made contact on the back stretch. Fink rolled and Wilson stayed upright but both were finished for the night. As the action went back to green, Miller was out front as fifth starting Landon Simon took second from Cooper Clouse and moved in on Miller. Simon would make the move for the lead in turn one on lap 6 as points leader Shawn Westerfeld would follow in his tire tracks for second. The two Indiana drivers would start to pull away from the field as a heated battle between Dustin Smith, Michael Fischesser, Clouse, Bobby Distl, Miller and Aaron Middaugh was in process for a top five finish. Caution flags on laps 13 and 18 would keep the field bunched together. As the final seven laps clicked off, Simon, of Indianapolis, held off one last charge by Westerfeld for his second BOSS win of the season aboard the Mount Baker Vapor #24. Dustin Smith would finish third behind Westerfeld to make it an all Indiana podium. Fischesser held on for fourth as 16 year old Clouse finished out the top five. Heat winners were Simon, Clouse and Westerfeld.
It was night four of the Wayne County Speedway/ Attica Raceway Park Late Model Series and in the three previous races, Wooster’s Doug Drown had won all three and won a heat race each night for the maximum 165 points. The heat race streak would be stopped by Matt Irey and Brad Malcuit topped those but Drown would draw the outside pole position along side JR Gentry. At the drop of the green flag, Drown and his Hall’s Auto Sales, Nationwide Vehicle Protection and Wooster Glass #240 popped into the lead with Ryan Markham right behind. A lap 4 caution for Chuck Kimble kept the field close together but on the restart, Drown would pull away from Markham as Gentry would lose a spot to Larry Kingseed with Irey and Malcuit in tow. Gentry would come to a stop in turn 4 on lap 14 for the final caution. Drown would pull away once again on the restart to post his 7th win at WCS and his 4th in the WCS/ARP Series. Markham would finish second for the 4th time in the Lias Tire Super Late Model points race. The last half of the race had the fans eyes glued to the battle for third as Kingseed, Irey, Malcuit and Cody Scott were changing positions on each lap before finishing in that order.
First time visitor Sam Ashworth would start on the pole of the Fisher Performance Sprint main with Newark’s Mitch Harble along side. Ashworth powered his way into the lead but a spun Shawn Hubler slowed the action on lap three. Back to green and 5 time winner Brad Haudenschild tried to take second from Harble but instead banged the turn two guardrail and flipped to bring out the red as Haudenschild was ok but his race was over. Jason Dolick would spin before another lap could be recorded. After that, the race would go non stop although Hubler would do a 360 spin and keep going on lap nine. Ashworth would build up a good sized lead over heat winner Harble as 12th starting Danny Mumaw was trying to do the power slide on Nick Patterson for third on laps eight and nine in turn one but Patterson would motor back by coming out of turn two but finally on lap 11, Mumaw’s slider worked to take third. Harble would start reeling in Ashworth as his machine started to fade. Harble and his Harble Motorsports, Fisher Performance and Kistler’s #15h would take the lead on lap 17. Mumaw would take second with five to go when Ashworth bounced off the front stretch wall but kept going and in the final laps, Mumaw was closing in on Harble but ran out of laps. Ashworth held on to third in front of Patterson and Hubler.
In just his second race of the year at WCS, Canton’s Paul Holmes went flag to flag for his first Aamco Transmission Super Stock win. Third starting Tyler Thompson would spin on lap two and Dennis Amstutz’s car would stop would slow the early action but after that, Holmes and his black #68 would drive away as 5 time winner and 8th starting Nick Smith in pursuit. Brandon Gardner finished in the third spot with Frank Oriti and Gary Hensel Jr. filling out the top five. Holmes and Tyler Nicely picked up the heat wins.
Driving the DJ Directional Services and Fast Lane Towing #28, Wooster’s Brad Hensel led all the way for his second WQKT Mini Stock win. Billy Parsons was stuck on the back of Hensel,s car but could never make the move to get by. Michael Workman, who had won the last three features, started 10th and moved into third on lap 7 and finished third. The two heat winners, Gary Hensel Jr. and Stephen Crowe rounded out the top five.
Last weeks winner, Chuck Conway led the opening three laps of the Flat Track Cart feature but Jamie Johnson squeezed by on the next circuit and then held on for his second win aboard the RJR Racing and Double T Speedway #33. Conway finished second with Steve Reed, Matt Aber and Dan Delaney following. Johnson and Scott Delaney paced the heats.
Lakeville’s Billy Dawson swept the Mini Wedge races as he pocketed his fifth feature win of the season aboard the Harriger Towing, DJ Directional Services and Miller Racing #7b. Matthew Moore and Jolene Voshel trailed Dawson.
Contingency Connection awards of $100,000 for the season for the WCS drivers once again were available in last nights racing action.
Saturday night August 15 will be a regular racing program on tap as the Fisher Peformance Sprints, Lias Tire Super Late Models, Harriger Towing Rush Late Models, Aamco Transmission Super Stocks, WQKT Mini Stocks and the Flat Track Carts and the Wedges will be in action. Check the website at
