Inaugural Visit to Lakeside Speedway up Next for ULMA Late Model Drivers

Although the regular point’s season for Lucas Cattle Company ULMA Late Models Drivers officially came to a close last weekend, motors are set to refire once again this Friday, September 18 when ULMA drivers make their first-ever appearance at the popular Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas!

The arrangements for the event have been ongoing for several weeks and were finalized in time enough to officially announce the race a few weeks before the end of the season to allow drivers time to prepare for their appearance at the Kansas speedplant. In recent post-season surveys taken by active ULMA drivers, Lakeside Speedway consistently ranked high on the list of tracks ULMA drivers wished they could compete on.

Several drivers have expressed to the association their desire to compete this weekend including this season’s ULMA Champion Jon Melloway, who became ULMA’s eighth different champion in nine years! Missouri-based veterans Steve Clancy, Kevin Coyne, and Bob King are hopeful contenders as are 2014 ULMA Champion Jon Binning and 2008 ULMA Champion Jason Bodenhamer. Wesley Briggs, Cody Holtkamp, and Jake Williams have also expressed hopes of taking home a Lakeside win!

Bobby Penney, John O’Neal Jr., and Gary Billings plan to represent the greater Kansas City metro in keeping the win close to home base. Billings has been out of late models for a period of time but plans a return to the late model ranks this weekend at Lakeside Speedway. O’Neal has already posted a ULMA victory this season, his first in a ULMA Late Model. Bobby Penney also posted his first-ever ULMA victory during the 2015 season.

Chris Smyser of Lancaster, Missouri expressed his desire to compete with ULMA officials as he plans to make the long haul to compete. Smyser’s experience behind the wheel of a Late Model on larger-sized tracks will definitely keep his name high on the list of potential winners when Friday rolls around. Smyser recorded multiple victories this season at the high-banked Randolp County Raceway (RCR) in Mobelry, Missouri. Please note, the drivers listed here are drivers who expressed to ULMA their expected participation in the event, mention of any driver name does not guarantee race appearance!

Technical inspection will be conducted throughout the night at the discretion of ULMA and track officials! ULMA drivers will follow Lakeside Speedway general track rules and must be in compliance with all ULMA car class rules as written. All ULMA drivers must attend the Lakeside Speedway driver’s meeting at 6:30 on Friday.

The Lakeside Speedway Driver’s Meeting takes place at 6:30 with hot laps at 6:45 and racing at 7:30. The planned order of events for Friday night is Grand Nationals, Stock Cars, B-Mods, ULMA Late Models, and USRA Modifieds. All pit passes are $30. Pits open at 4:30 followed by grandstands at 5. Adult general admission is $12, Seniors, Military, and Students w/I.D. are $10, Kids ages 6 to 12 are $6, five and under are free.

ULMA wishes to thank Lakeside Speedway owners and promoters Don and Donna Marrs and their staff for working with and offering the association a race date at the speedway. ULMA also wishes to thank John O’Neal for his dillegence in helping secure a race date at the speedway. A rain date of Friday, September 25th has been established by Lakeside Speedway should inclimate weather settle in over the area on Friday.
