Chevy Super Series Top Stars And CT525 Engine A Familiar Sight At Icebowl

by Roby Helm
CARTERSVILLE, GA (January 6) - The drivers of the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series and the economical all-aluminum engine that powers their race cars, the Chevrolet Performance CT525, are a familiar sight at the Icebowl, held each January at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL. The 25th Edition of the Icebowl takes place this Thursday through Sunday.

The Super Late Model main event scheduled for Sunday afternoon will pay $6,000 to the winner, almost enough to pay for the Chevrolet Performance CT525 Engine. A star-studded field of drivers along with the past three winners will be looking to make it four in-a-row for the Chevrolet Performance CT525 Engine.

In the past three races, a Chevrolet Performance CT525 Engine has powered the winner in the Super Late Model Division to Victory Lane. The $7,195 engine based on the LS3 production engine out of the Chevrolet Corvette, Chevrolet Camaro, and Chevrolet SS and available at Chevrolet Dealerships worldwide will be looking for its fourth straight Icebowl win on Sunday.

Ross Martin of Talladega, AL drove his CT525 powered car to the Icebowl win in 2013. The 2013 Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series National Champion William Thomas of Phenix City, AL drove his CT525 powered car to victory in 2014. The defending champion of the Icebowl, Tim Roszell of Oxford, AL, used CT525 power for his win last year.

The top two drivers in the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series point standings for the past two seasons, two-time and defending National Champion Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN, and two-time National Championship Runner-Up Tyler Crowder of Lamont, FL are expected for the Icebowl. Johnson is a former Icebowl Champion, pre-CT525 days.

A pair of drivers powered by the CT525 that are Talladega Short Track Super Late Model veterans, and Chevy Super Series top guns, will be looking for an Icebowl Trophy this Sunday afternoon.

Tim Busha of Boaz, AL finished third in the 2015 Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series point standings, and second-generation driver Adam Martin of Talladega, AL will be looking to join his father as an Icebowl Champion. Martin was the 2015 Cruise With The Champions Rookie of the Year with the Chevy Super Series and finished fourth in the point standings.

Other top Chevy Super Series stars looking to make a name for themselves with a good run in a CT525 powered race car are Mario Gresham of Rome, GA, second-generation driver Jake Knowles of Rome, GA, Brandon Williams of Crossville, TN, Jadon Frame of Winchester, TN, Trevor Thompson of Dallas, GA. Terry Smith of Oxford, AL, and Jeff Smith of Dalton, GA.

There will be super late model with more expensive engines with more horsepower, but the Chevrolet Performance CT525 All-Aluminum Racing Engine, built and sealed at the factory to prevent any expensive modifications, has found a level playing field on the 1/3-mile clay oval at Talladega Short Track.

Despite a fire at Talladega Short Track on December 27 that burned the Control Tower and main Concession Stand to the ground, the 25th Annual Icebowl will go on as scheduled. Crews of volunteer help that consisted of racers and fans alike have been busy at Talladega Short Track cleaning up and removing the charred remains of the building.

Portable Concession Stands have been brought in to serve the fans, and Race Control has been moved to the V.I.P. Tower in turn four of the 1/3-mile clay oval. NeSmith Racing will officiate the 25th Annual Icebowl that will also feature the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series, Limited Late Models/Sportsmen, the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division, Thunder Cars, and Hot Shots.

Talladega Short Track officials have said construction of a new Control Tower and main Concession Stand will begin after the completion of the 25th Annual Icebowl. The racing surface itself was not affected by the fire, and NeSmith Racing has brought in “Dr. Dirt” Johnny Stokes from Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS to manicure and prepare the track.

The action will begin on Thursday with an open practice session to prepare for the 25th Annual Icebowl at Talladega Short Track with the gates opening at 9 a.m., and practice from 12 noon to 5 p.m. There will also be a practice on Friday with the gates opening at 9 a.m. and the practice from 12 noon to 4:30 p.m.

Qualifying and Heat Races to fill the front starting spots for the $6,000-to-win main event will be on Saturday. The gates open at 8 a.m., with Pre-Race Registration from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The Drivers Meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and Hot Laps will begin at 10 a.m.

The B-Main Races to fill the back half of the big show and the $6,000-to-win main event will take place on Sunday. The gates will open at 9 a.m. with the Drivers Meeting scheduled for 11 a.m. The Opening Ceremonies for the 25th Annual Icebowl are set for 11:30 a.m. with racing at 12 noon.
