Lloyd ‘Lucky’ to take Limited Super 5 Challenge win at GIS
Garrett Lloyd, Wooten, Keller, Barker, Parsons  also take checkers

WAYNESVILLE, Ga. (May 14) – It was good to be out front. Or maybe it was not.

Michael Lloyd took advantage of demolition derby-type situations and won the Limited Late Model Super 5 Challenge at Golden Isles Speedway Saturday evening.

“It was good just to finish,” Lloyd said. “The car had some damage, but the night turned out all right. I’d rather be lucky than good any time.”

Polesitter Woodrow Mullis had built a straightaway advantage as Lloyd moved into second in the 25-lapper. The 17-year old superstar was then gathered in a crash from Cecil Eunice spinning in turn three on Lap 12 and was forced pitside to change a tire.

“We started picking off some cars,” Lloyd said. “We were way behind. (Mullis) probably would’ve won if he wasn’t in the wreck, but we were gaining people said.”

Lloyd’s Michael Lloyd Hauling/Bradco Environmental Hall-powered machine beat Scott Waters by 10 car lengths and pocketed $2,000. Mullis battled from the rear to take third followed by Adam Collins and Lonnie Roberts.

Several of the race teams pondered over tire selection to create the ultimate stagger for the quick 4/10-mile red clay oval. Tires never seemed to be an issue.

“The track was real dry slick,” Lloyd said. “You had to slow down early and let the car coast down through the center of the corner and get some good forward (bite) off.”

Mullis started the night as fast qualifier.

The victory bettered the night for Lloyd, whose EMod blew an engine in that feature.

Stepping in was nephew Garrett Lloyd. He cruised from the pole and paced the 15-lap EMod finale. The Tom Kelly Construction/P&G Land Clearing/Stover Sales Koury-powered Shaw by Lloyd beat Brandon Wells, Dillon Turner, Randy Gainey and Nick Kirkus.

Chris Keller led all 15 laps and won the Super Street feature. He left a nearly three-wide battle between Roger Thomas, Keith Smith, Paul Jones behind. Smith spun with two laps left leaving Thomas and Jones as the rest of the top three.

Johnny Barker topped a 18-car Enduro field and won a side by side battle with Billy Ammons. The runner up topped all but the last of 15 laps when Barker slid by on the inside. The defending track champ is the third different Enduro winner in three 2016 events. The finale was crash-marred keeping the field close.

Brian Wooten debuted his brand new Rocketman chassis and dominated the NeSmith Performance Street Stock night. He was first in his heat and first in the 16-car, 15-lap feature over the other heat winner Shaun Washam, Windal Clark, Brian Grantham and Daron Bailey.

Courtney Parsons took the 440 finale, edging a charging Jimmy Williams.
Racing continues May 21 at GIS featuring the I-95 Toyota Challenge Late Model Series racing for $3,000 to win and will serve as race number two in the GIS Super 5 Challenge. Also in action are the Enduros for a GIS Super 5 Challenge event with $1,000 to the winner. Those classes will be joined by Super Streets, Hobby Stocks and 440s. Hot laps are set for 6 p.m. with racing to follow.
