Riley Hickman Enjoys Double-Win Weekend

by Ben Shelton
CLEVELAND, Tennessee (June 1) – Riley Hickman embarked on an ultra-busy slate of Memorial Day weekend racing in Tennessee and Georgia and he came away with a pair of victories in his Hickman Manufacturing #R1 Club 29 Crate Late Model to show for his efforts.

Competing in both his Super Late Model and Crate Late Model, Riley Hickman traveled to Boyd’s Speedway (Ringgold, Georgia) on Friday night to kick off his Memorial Day weekend. Drawing a stout field of 46-Super Late Models for the Old Man’s Garage Spring Nationals event, Hickman secured his spot into the $4,000-to-win show with a heat race victory. Reeling in a Top-5 finish, Riley posted a 4th-place finish behind race winner, Mike Marlar, Donald McIntosh, and Dale McDowell with Jason Hiett rounding out the top five.

During the same night in a field of 21-Crate Late Models, Hickman timed in third quick, earning him a 2nd-row starting spot for the feature. Paying $1,500 to the winner of the feature, Riley took the lead at the halfway point and went on to claim his seventh victory of the season with Jamie Perry, John Ownbey, Jason Deal, and Chip Brindle trailing him across the finish line.

Saturday night brought Hickman to Thunderhill Raceway (Summertown, Tennessee), where he was again competing in two separate divisions. In a field of 18-Super Late Models, Riley parked his Crate Late Model in the Top-5 in the feature after running into trouble with the Super Late Model in hot laps. Working his way into the Top-5, Riley Hickman registered a 5th-place finish.

With 23-competitors in action in the Crate Late Model division, Riley Hickman captured his eighth victory of the season in the feature event.

Wrapping up the action-packed Memorial Day weekend, Riley Hickman stopped at Duck River Raceway Park (Wheel, Tennessee) for the $3,500-to-win Super Late Model A-Main on Sunday night. After qualifying 8th, Hickman suffered mechanical issues in the feature resulting in an early departure from the main event.

During the same night in the Crate division, Riley Hickman followed up the fastest time in the field with a runner-up finish in the feature behind race winner, Jamie Perry.

“That was a ton of racing in one weekend,” laughed Hickman. “We definitely had some struggles along the way, but overall it was a pretty successful weekend. I want to thank my crew chief, Brad (Carvin) for busting his tail all weekend to keep two cars ready to race.”

The upcoming weekend, June 3-4, will find Hickman competing in a pair of NeSmith Late Model Series events in his home state. On Friday night he will be in action at I-75 Raceway (Sweetwater, Tennessee) in a $2,000-to-win affair before heading to 411 Motor Speedway (Seymour, Tennessee) on Saturday evening for a $4,000-to-win event.
