NORRIS WINS TENTH ANNUAL RED MILEY RUMBLE AT PPMS

Imperial, PA (August 27, 2016) Michael Norris from Sarver was the winner of the UFo Race Championship sanctioned 35-lap Tenth Annual Diehl Automotive Red Miley Rumble on Saturday night at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. Norris was the 2012 division champion and had earned ten previous feature wins, but despite competing here on a limited basis this season, he surely hasn't forgotten his way around the "Monster Half Mile." With this being the last 2016 point night for the Diehl Automotive Super Late Models, Brandon Burgoon earned his second division point title, to go with his 2009 championship.

Other race night winners included John Mollick in the Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Models, for the fifth time this season. Mollick would be the only repeat winner in the final race event in August, as all other winners including Norris earned their first wins of the season. Corey McPherson won a RUSH Late Model feature and point championship in 2014, but tonight earned his first win in the Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman. Tyler Fox returned to victory lane for the first time this season in the Miley BP Car Wash Hobby Stocks, his last win coming in 2012. A season of trying was worthwhile for Ben Anton in the Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns, as he earned his first career victory. Bill Tennant earned his first victory in the open Four Cylinders in their third event this season.

The tenth running of the Red Miley Rumble sanctioned by the UFo Race Championship produced 23 Diehl Automotive Super Late Models, with heat race wins going to Devin Moran, Alex Ferree, and Keith Barbara. The redraw for the top 12 starting positions gave front row spots to Dan Angelicchio and Scott Gunn, and Angelicchio took the lead when the green flag waved for 35 laps. Third starting Moran moved to second when lap 1 was scored, but eighth starting Michael Norris was quickly on the move to the front. Norris passed Moran for second on lap 3 and quickly started to track down Angelicchio in the lead. Norris made the pass to take over the lead on lap 8. With Norris extending his lead, the battle was for second between Angelicchio, Moran, Alex Ferree, and Dylan Yoder. Ferree took third on lap 15, Moran got it back on lap 18, and Yoder passed Ferree for fourth with 19 laps in. The only caution period of the event came on lap 20 for a spin by Matt Dobnak in turn two. Back to green, Norris once again took off in the lead, with Moran gaining second over Angelicchio, Ferree, and Keith Barbara. Norris would have smooth sailing over the remaining distance, earning the victory over Moran by 5.306 seconds. Ferree finished third, after taking the position on lap 30. Barbara finished fourth, after he and fifth finishing Yoder passed Angelicchio on the final lap. Russell King, John Flinner, Michael Davis, and Tommy Schirnhofer rounded out the top ten. Burgoon was the Diehl Automotive Super Late Model point champion by 22 points over Flinner. Christian Schneider was third in points after moving up from the Sportsman class, ahead of Butch Neubert and John Mollick.

Bill Kessler and Jake Gunn led the 20 lap Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Models on the starting grid with Gunn leading at the green. After a first lap caution, Gunn led but was feeling pressure from fourth starting Daryl Charlier. Their battle continued through a lap 5 restart when Charlier would take the lead with 12th starting John Mollick now up to second. The top two point cars would battle for the lead until disaster struck Charlier on lap 12, when he got too high in turn three and made contact with the outside wall to bring out the caution. The good news was that he was able to continue after a visit to the pits, but the bad news was that 19 cars were still running and he was the last of them. Mollick led the remaining distance to pick up his fifth victory of the season, giving him the point lead in the process by three points over Charlier. Ben Policz finished a close second from tenth starting spot, .729 seconds behind the winner. Third went to Michael Reft, advancing from ninth starting spot. Justin Lamb was fourth with Steve Beatty fifth, and Gunn sixth. The toughest break of the night belonged to Russ Matejka. He was a mere 100 yards from finishing a drive from 16th to seventh, but spun off turn four to finish the event under a yellow/checkered situation. By rule, this dropped him to finishing position 19. Filling the top ten were Russ Kolesar in seventh, Scott Schempp, Tony Musolino in the Gunn 114, and Charlier who lost his point lead but limited the damage by getting back to tenth. Heat race winners over the 20 entries were Mollick, Charlier, and Reft.

The 15 lap Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman feature ran non-stop and it was Corey McPherson becoming the 85th different winner in 629 events run for the class. Starting third, McPherson slipped by both front row starters Jeff Broniszewski and A.J. Poljak to lead lap 1, leading the entire distance to win by 2.185 seconds. Seventh starting Bill Robertson, last year's division point champion, passed Poljak for second on lap 6 but was unable to get close enough to McPherson to challenge. Todd Weldon started 15th on the grid after dropping out of his heat race before taking the green, but charged through the pack to get third, passing point leader Dave McManus on the last lap. With his fourth place finish, McManus extended his point lead to 40 points over Ricky Stigerwald, who was unable to start the feature. Fifth went to Poljak, as McManus and sixth place finisher Nick Kocuba won heat races over the 15 car field.

In the 12 lap feature for the Miley BP Car Wash Hobby Stocks, it was Tyler Fox earning the win, holding off heat winner Dave Sheriff. Top point cars Dale Tuche and Casey Grumling tangled racing for third on lap 9. Grumling was able to continue and finished third. Tuche was towed to the pits and finished fourth, and leads the points by four with two nights remaining. John Dotten made his first appearance of the season but lost an engine in the heat race. Peyton Wiser crashed in turn four in hot laps and was done for the night.

After finishing second four times in his rookie season, Ben Anton finally earned his first career feature win in the Imperial Heights Garage Young Gun 6 lap feature. Anton and Kayla McManus led the five car field to green with Anton leading from the start. McManus passed Anton for the lead on lap 3, but Anton passed her back on lap 4 to take the win over McManus, point leader Michael Jackson, newcomer Justin Clark, and Tyler Tennant.

Bill Tennant outdistanced the five starters in the 8 lap Four Cylinder feature in their third event of the season, with last week's winner Cody Quarrick taking second over Andy Garlinger. Makenna Hemming was fourth with opening night winner Tom Anton fifth.

Racing continues at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway on Saturday night, September 3, with the running of the Falconi's Moon Township Automotive Sprint Monster for the Winged 410 Sprints. Highlighting the card will be the running of the 27th Annual Jook George Steel City Fall Classic for the Precise Racing Products RUSH Late Models, the biggest crate Late Model race in the history of the track with the winner earning in excess of $4000. It will be "Toys for the Kids Night," with point racing for the Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman, Miley BP Car Wash Hobby Stocks, and Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns. The RUSH Modifieds will be making another appearance, and open Four Cylinders will return. For Saturday night's racing program, the gates will open at 5:00, with warm-ups at 6:00 and racing at 7:00.
