GASTONIA, N.C. (June 6) - Tim Allen thrilled his home track fans Friday night at Carolina Speedway by pulling a huge upset over a strong Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series field to collect his first career Clash win and the $4,000 that came along with it.
"Thank you, Jesus!" exclaimed an elated yet humble Allen from victory lane. He continues, "We have been struggling all year long and we have been looking for a way to hook it all up. Man, what a great place to break out here at Carolina Speedway in this Carolina Clash Race racing against some of the best in the business."
Four time and defending Carolina Clash Champion Ricky Weeks led the field to the green after securing the pole in Mega Plumbing of the Carolina's Qualifying. On the start Allen blasted to the inside of Weeks to grab the point with Weeks, Johnny Pursley, Jonathan Davenport and Jeff Smith in tow. Davenport squeezed by Pursley for third on lap three with Smith following suit on the next lap. Furman Parton, fresh off his first career Carolina Clash win a few weeks ago, moved Pursley back one more spot as he joined the top five on lap six.Weeks' hopes of his first victory of the season ended on lap seven when he pulled his entry pitside with mechanical problems.
On the restart Smith quickly went to work on Davenport for second as Allen began to stretch his lead out. The man on the move was Dennis 'Rambo' Franklin. Franklin from the 14th position and by the half way point of the 40 lap affair was up to sixth and pressuring Ed Gibbons for a top five spot. On lap 21 Smith was able to make the inside work as he motored around Davenport for second. Lap 30 saw Franklin join the top five as Parton moved into third, just before the seventh and final caution of the event waved on lap 35. This set up a five lap dash to the checkers.
On the restart Allen quickly sped away to erase any doubt of the eventual outcome. The reigning Carolina Speedway track champion drove his Steelworks/DRM Express/Granite Muffler/High Tide Motel/Lacrosse Racing Engines/GRT Monte Carlo to the biggest win of his racing career. Smith ended up second with Parton third, Franklin fourth and Davenport fifth.
Sixth through tenth went to Gibbons, Doug Sanders, Mike Duvall, Anthony Sanders and Craig Shuffield.
Anthony Sanders took the win in the Cabinets by Design Heat Race. Franklin was the Heintz Brothers Performance Hard Charger of the Race. Ricky Boahn collected the $100 Dirt Trax Motorsports Hard Luck Award.
The Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series will be back in action this weekend with a pair of $4,000 to win main events. Friday night's show will be at Lavonia Speedway in Lavonia, GA with Saturday night's event the '2nd Annual Wild West Shootout' at Tri-County Racetrack in Brasstown, NC.
