Lowe's PR CONCORD, N.C. (April 18) - Veteran Billy Moyer, of Batesville, Ark., shattered the track record in topping the 69-car field during time trials on opening night of the third annual Circle K Colossal 100 Friday at The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway. Moyer, a four-time winner this season on the nomadic World of Outlaws circuit, posted a lap of 14.672 seconds around the four-tenths-mile clay oval, easily eclipsing the previous record of 14.905 seconds set by Steve Shaver during last year's World Finals. Time trials were followed by eight qualifying heat races for the World of Outlaws late models with the top-three finishers in each advancing to the $50,000-to-win, 100-lap finale that will conclude the two-day program Saturday night. The 10-lap heat races were won by Moyer, Dan Schlieper, Jeep Van Wormer, Steve Shaver, Josh Richards, Chub Frank, Jimmy Owens and John Gill. Also among those claiming spots in Saturday night's 36-car main event were two-time defending race winner Scott Bloomquist, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series veteran Bobby Labonte's driver Earl Pearson Jr. and Tim McCreadie, making his first start driving the No. 15 car owned by defending World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion Steve Francis. The remaining 12 feature starters will be determined through an additional series of qualifying races Saturday night, and the top-24 drivers will draw to determine their exact starting positions. There were no major incidents during the 80 laps of late model heat race action. Schlieper was second fastest during time trials at 14.977 seconds while Donnie Moran stopped the timers at 15.008 seconds to earn the third spot. Rounding out the top-five qualifiers were Dennis "Rambo" Franklin and Chris Madden. Rusty Drye, driving the Vigilante entry, held off a last-lap challenge from John Rary's Nuclear Banana to win the 15-lap CRASHCar feature. Drye lined up second, took the lead at the wave of the green flag and never looked back en route to his first victory of the season. Rary settled for second-place money while defending series champion Paul Sparrow was third in the Invader. The Circle K Colossal 100 continues Saturday night. Activities begin with a driver autograph session starting at 4:30 p.m. In order to gain admission to the Circle K Pit Party, fans must present an event ticket along with an empty can of Full Throttle energy drink, which can be purchased at any area Circle K store. Once inside the pit party, each fan will receive a limited edition Circle K Colossal 100 event poster.
