PERRIS, Calif. (July 26) - Torrance, California's Carla Laney scored a popular win in the Extreme Late Model 25 lap main event at Don Kazarian's famous Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday. It was the veteran drivers first win of 2008 and her second ever late model main event victory on the Riverside County clay oval.

Laney started the main event on the outside of the second row and trailed Dale Ubderwood into the first corner when the Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply green flag opened the festivities. Johnny Malcolm, who out qualified the field with a blistering of 17.907, quickly worked his way from the sixth starting spot to second and staged a torrid dual with Underwood for the first place.

While Underwood and Malcolm were fighting for the lead, series point leader Mike Kirby passed Laney, his sister, on lap eight for third. One lap later Malcolm passed Underwood for the lead and quickly built up a half straightaway lead. Kirby, who had won the past two main events at The PAS, got by Underwood for second on lap 11, but he unexpectedly spun in turn three one lap later when his power steering belt snapped. He was finished for the night.

When the race went back to green and after a couple more subsequent restarts nobody had anything for Malcolm. However, in turn four on lap 21 Malcolm slid sideways and nearly came to stop. By the time he recovered, Laney put the crowd on its feet when she swept by the upcoming star for the lead. Malcolm had more problems in the next corner and the almost certain win saw him drop to fifth and the finish.

Laney led the rest of the way and received a rousing ovation from the crowd for the win. Laney is one of the few female drivers to have ever won a Late Model main event anywhere in the nation. Jeff Dunham finished second in Mike Hixson's car after they swapped rides for the main event. Underwood finished in the third spot with Bill Bartels and Malcolm rounding out the top five.

Mike Clark took a nasty flip on the back straightaway on the last lap, but he emerged unscathed from his damaged racecar. Hixson and Kirby won the heat races.

Trona, California's Chris Smith came from the fifth start spot to win his third MC Painting & Construction Super Stock main of the 2008. 2006 champion Mark Shackelford was second with current point leader Ed Perry third.

In the PASSCAR Street Stock's El Cajon's Billy Baldwin beat Clyde Smith to the checkers in the 20 lap main. Tommy "Thunder" Malcolm was third. Norwalk's Ron Davis continued his domination of the Pick-A-Part Factory Stocks with a win over Josh Warwick and Tom Gillum in the main event.
