Williams Grove Speedway MECHANICSBURG, Penn. (June 8) - Gary Stuhler made it look easy as he rolled to a $5000 victory in the 40-lap late model feature Tuesday night at Williams Grove Speedway.
The event was the third leg of Appalachian Mountain Late Model Speed Week presented by Century Link.
Stuhler started on the front row alongside Keith Jackson and edged into the lead on the backstretch of the first lap.
While Stuhler was setting the pace the 19-year old Jackson was under attack from some late model veterans. Jeremy Miller took second place on lap six, but Jackson wouldn't go away.
After holding off Wisconsin's Jimmy Mars for third place, Jackson took the second spot back from Miller on lap twelve with Mars on his tail.
New Yorker Vic Coffey entered the picture when he drove by Mars on lap 17. While Jackson and Coffey battled for the runnerup spot, Stuhler began to pull away.
Stuhler cruised unchallenged to the victory by a margin of 1.45 seconds at the finish.
It was the 21st career triumph for the speedway's leading active winner. Stuhler, who hadn't won a race anywhere since 2008, was pleased to end his slump on Tuesday night. His last victory at Williams Grove came three years ago and his first win at this historic speedway was 30 years ago.
Jackson was second with Coffey third. D. J. Myers nipped Mars for fourth. Series point leader Rick Eckert was sixth with Colby Frye, Miller, Nick Dickson and Scott Haus completing the top ten.
Myers set fast time in qualifications with a lap of 22.319.
Heats for the 50 late models in competition were won by Frye, Miller, Coffey, Jackson and Eckert.
Jamie Lathroum and Andy Anderson won the consolation races.
In the companion 358-sprint feature, Scott Geesey started 9th and took the lead from Kevin Nouse on the final turn to win the 20-lap race.
Nouse, Cannon, Cory Haas and Chad Trout completed the top five.
Heats for the 35 358-sprints were won by Jessica Anderson, Brian Garland, Danny Massey and Trout.
Dale Hammaker claimed the consolation race.
