Alex Cummings WINGATE, N.C. (July 1) - Ricky Weeks was able to motor his way to his second victory of the season with the Clash South on Friday night at Harris Speedway. Weeks was able to lead flag to flag in route to his series leading second victory of the season which helped to add to his ever growing points lead with the Clash South. "I wanted to dedicate this win to a very special person that is close to my heart, my uncle, the late J.D. Weeks" Weeks said after the race. "I want to thank my sponsors also, Starrette Trucking, Parton Lumber, Adams Electric, and a special thanks to Phyllis and Ike". Weeks took his Randy Clary powered Rocket chassis and placed it on the pole with a time of 15.267 which is also a new track record at the newly configured Harris Speedway. "I would like to thank RE Suspensions for my recent success in my super late model" Weeks said after the race.
When the green flag waved over the starting field, it was Weeks who opted to take the outside pole starting position to get the run on the high side taking the lead. The 09 of Johnny Pursley who set second fast time was on the inside pole and the two cars raced around Harris Speedway dead even, door handle to door handle for the next 8 laps. While the lead was being highly contested, the 17 of Mike Gault and the 87 of Ross Bailes were swapping the 4th position around. They switched positions a total of 4 times within the first 8 laps of the feature event.
The first caution would wave on lap 8 when the 99 of Jeff Cooke slowed with a real bad skip in the motor. Cooke would be pushed behind the wall which ended his night. On the restart, Pursley got a wicked bad push in turn two and lost two positions. Then on lap 10, Gault and the 2 of Dennis Franklin tangled together in turn 2 sending Franklin into the spin cycle for the second caution of the night.
Lap 17 saw the 51 of Randy Harmon go for a spin in turn 4. On the very next lap, Pursley would have more problems when the rear-end broke in turn 4. Pursley would have to go on the business end of the wrecker which ended his night.
When the green was thrown for the final 17 lap dash, the 84 of Jay Sessoms and Franklin were battling door handle to door handle for the fourth position. For the final 15 laps of the race, the two cars battled it out side by side with Sessoms being able to prevail in the end.
When the checkers were thrown it was Ricky Weeks in victory lane followed by the 17 of Mike Gault in his Hamrick's of Gaffney, Gault's Auto, Clements powered Rocket chassis. Coming home in the third position was the 87 of Ross Bailes in his Felony Farms sponsored Red Racing Engines powered Masterbuilt chassis. The 84 of Jay Sessoms came home fourth in his South Pine Needles, Alloy Fabrications sponsored Rocket chassis. Rounding out your top five in the heavily contested race was the 2 of Dennis Franklin in his Cherokee Landscaping sponsored Clements powered Barry Wright chassis.
Jay Sessoms had a career night with his 4th place finish at Harris Speedway along with the 51 of Randy Harmon who also had a career best 7th place finish in the race. The 12w of Gabe Wilson made his first ever Clash South appearance as he towed all the way from North Georgia for the race. The 38 of Jamie Oliver also made his first ever Clash South appearance Saturday night as he towed all the way from Murphy, NC. Thank you to both drivers for making the long haul to Harris Speedway and supporting the Clash South, it's greatly appreciated.
After three races in the Clash South, Ricky Weeks is still showing the way as the point's leader with no signs of letting up. Weeks already has two victories to his name this season, one at Travelers Rest and one at Harris.
