Jason Shank PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (July 6) - The 'Weaver Gas & Oil Independence Day 50' wasn't actually run on Independence Day, Mother Nature made sure of that, but Shinnston, WV's Josh Richards didn't seem to mind the wait as he got by R.J. Conley on the fifth circuit to cruise to his first career MACS A-Main feature win.
Portsmouth Raceway Park regulars, Kenny Christy and R.J. Conley led the anxious 24 car field to the green with R.J. grabbing the lead on the slick 3/8th mile oval. The 2005 World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year, Richards made his way underneath Christy as the field tip toed their way into turns three and four. The pace was slowed on the second lap as 2007 MACS Rookie of the Year Matt Lux and his AlturnaMATS sponsored #21 came to halt in turn four.
The 'Delaware Style' restart gave Richards the opening he was looking for to get by race leader Conley. The two battled for the next to laps until Richards out braked R.J. going into the third corner to grab the lead. The second of six caution flags flew on lap five as Waylon Wagner, Audie Swartz, 2002 MACS Champion Jack Pencil, Joe Ramey and Josh McGuire all spun in turn three. All five drivers were able to continue and very little contact was made between the bunch.
After another quick caution for the flat tire of Josh McGuire on lap nine, it was still 'Kid Rocket' in command as Saturday night's MACS 'Pepsi 75' winner, Eddie Carrier Jr. worked the high side of the riverside high-banked oval to move past Rod Conley for fourth from his tenth place starting position while Michael England ran a comfortable third. Current 2008 MACS Championship Points leader Jason Covert was also on the move from his 13th starting position as he raced his way up to sixth with ten laps remaining.
Richards continued his assault on Portsmouth Raceway Park during the final ten laps of the 50 lap affair by pulling away from R.J. and the rest of the field to collect his first career MACS win in the Ernie Davis owned #25 that Josh drives on a part time basis. Following 'Kid Rocket' to the checkers was R.J. Conley in second, England third, and Carrier Jr. and Rod Conley coming home in fourth and fifth. Finishing sixth was the defending MACS champion Covert with Brandon Kinzer seventh, Ben Adkins eighth, as Doug Drown and Jeremy Miller completed the top ten.
