CROSSVILLE, Tenn. (April 25) - The Southern Regional Racing Series Presented by PPM Racing Products, made a stop at Crossville Raceway USA on Friday night for "The Chris Sopha Memorial". The excellent crowd on hand saw 44 super late models sign in to race, with all trying to take home the $3,000 first place prize money.

The group qualifying saw Crossville's own, #17 Brett Wyatt, in his PPM Chassis/RED Race Engine machine sponsored by Wyatt Builders/Star Grafix and Signs, win the "Star Grafix and Signs Fast Time Award", with a lap of 12.454 around the historic 1/3 clay oval. The second quick qualifier was Chickamauga, Ga.'s Dale McDowell, driving Joe Armes' #77 car, with a lap of 12.521 to join Wyatt on the front row for the feature. Four heat races were ran to help set the feature line-up. The four heat race winners was #44, #01 Jay Brinkley, #98 Eric Hickerson, and #5e Jason Durham.

The 40-lap feature started with McDowell jumping into the lead, only to see a caution come out, as #44 Rick Rogers got sideways, and #201 Billy Ogle Jr. and #B17 Byron Michaels got tangled up. Michaels night would be done and Ogle Jr would return to his spot. On the restart, it was McDowell again powering into the lead with Wyatt and #116 Randy Weaver in third. Weaver got by Wyatt for second with a power slide on lap 2. Another caution on lap 4 slowed down the race, as #D25 Seth Daniel stopped on the track. On lap 7, #56 David Gentry turned it around and brought out another caution. McDowell continued to lead the field, as Ogle Jr. got by Wyatt for third on the restart. McDowell entered lap traffic on lap 14, and manuevered through that like the seasoned professional he is. Weaver was also getting through the lapped traffic, but just with the ease as McDowell.

On lap 25, McDowell had a half of a straightaway length lead on Weaver, and Weaver had a full straightaway on Ogle Jr. On lap 30, #53 Ray Cook came to a stop on the front stretch, as his night ended while running 5th. #157 Mike Marlar was running in the fifth position after the caution, and on the restart got by Wyatt for fourth. McDowell kept the contenders at a distance the rest of the way, as he took his McDowell Enterprises machine to victory lane. Weaver finished second, Ogle Jr. third, Marlar fourth, and Wyatt rounded out the top five. Finishing six through ten was Brinkley, Rogers, Durham, #1r Riley Hickman, and #m31 Tony Morris.

The Late Model Stock class saw #17 Wyatt set fast time in this class as well, with a lap of 13.764. At the start it was Monterey's #3R Robert Edwards vaulting into the lead on the high side. Wyatt stayed on Edwards and pressured him for the lead. #5m Scott Shelton would catch and pass Wyatt on lap nineteen to take over the second position. Edwards would go on to capture his first win of the year, with Shelton in second, Wyatt in third, #13 Jim Bolen was fourth, and #25 Lynn Selby rounded out the top five.

In UMP Open Wheel action, it was Crossville's #7 Steve Mullinax dominating, as he set fast time, won the dash, and powered to the checkers in the 25-lap feature. #25 Robert Potter finished a distant second, #56 Michael Asberry third, #B4 Joey Whittenburg fourth, and rounding out the top five was #36 Billy Palmer.

Sparta's #20x Mike Selby took the win in the Pro Street Class. Rounding out the top five was #11x Chris Croinex, #79 Michael Huling, #5 Jesse Lowe, and #60 Ron Dodson.

The Mini Modifieds saw #36 Brian Gregory go flag-to-flag for the feature win. #01 Rocky McNabb was second, #38 Brad Hamilton third, #8 Derrick Hutchings fourth, and #15 Robert Woods finished fifth. The heat races were won by Hutchings and Gregory.

In the always competitive Pure Mini Class, Crossville's #J27 J.D. Rector took the lead on lap two and put it in cruise control to grab the feature win. #20 Spunky Brow was second, #46 Cody Rector third, #30 Mark Hittenger finished fourth, and #16R Robert Stone rounded out the top five. #18 and Cody Rector won the heat races.

Crossville's #11 Hannah Proffitt/Sam Proffitt was the winners in the Cruiser Class for the second week. #54 Michael Cantrell/Jackie Powell was seond, and #39 Yolanda Heuser/Barbara Turner finished third.
