WARTBURG, Tenn. (May 9) - The Southern Regional Racing Series, presented by PPM Racing Products, made the trip into the hills of East Tennessee, on Friday night. The skies were threatening, with a possible tornado crossing right over the speedway, dumping hail and producing high winds near the oval. This delayed racing for around an hour, as track personnel got the track back.

When the cars finally rolled onto the speedway, the racing was fantastic, at the fifty-plus year-old facility. Decatur, AL's Brandon King, took the Star Grafix Pole Award, in his Empire CNC Services Masterbilt, with a 13.119 second lap. 2007 S.R.R.S. Champion, Byron MIchael, from Florence, AL, took the outside front row.

As the 24-car field rolled off the line, King went to the lead, with MIchael and Murfreesboro, TN's Tony Morris battling for second. Mt. Pleasant, TN"s Ben Kittrell, who had his best qualifying run ever, in the Series, and Mt. Carmel, TN's Shon Flanery rounded out the top five.

The first caution of the evening came on lap thirteen, when Chickamauga, GA's Dale McDowell slowed in turn four, ending his night. At that point, Morris had moved to second, with MIchael third. Laps fifteen and sixteen also saw yellow flags, as Lenoir City, TN's Ruben Mayfield dropped a driveshaft, and Powell, TN's Steve Smith stopped in turn two, on consecutive laps. Mike Marlar, Winfield, TN, had moved from eleventh to fourth, at that point, and Michael had gotten by Morris.

That's the way they would ride, until the next caution flag waved on lap 31, when Oneida, TN's Tim Damron had problems on the backstretch.

Marlar got by Morris on the restart, moving to third, as King continued to show the way. He worked the lapped traffic to perfection, as MIchael tried to run him down. But the final nineteen laps would stay green, and King would not be denied on this Firday night, taking the checkers, and the $3000 first prize. Michael crossed the line second, with Morris making a late pass of Marler, for third. Marlar and Kittrell, rounded out the top five.
