Kerr fights off challengers for first Thunder Series win at Mountain Raceway

BRASSTOWN, N.C. (August 15) - Just as it appeared that Tommy Kerr of Maryville, TN would cruise to his second TTDCS win of the season and garner some valuable points on Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville toward the 2009 TTDCS Championship chase, it would slip away in the final few laps as Ogle took advantage of lapped traffic to claim his second straight win and third series win of the season Saturday night at Tri-County Racetrack in Brasstown, NC.

Ogle, who got tangled up with Shawn Chastain of Murphy, NC early in the feature, slipped from second to fifth in the early stages of the forty-lap feature after nearly tagging the front stretch wall. With a flurry of cautions and one red flag that slowed the event 10 times, Ogle's patient driving style would pay dividends in the end.

Kerr dominated early and would stretch his lead by as much as an entire straight-a-way over the field but his lead was diminished several times by caution flags and his strong hold on the field waned in the closing laps as he was first challenged by hometown favorite Johnny Chastain of Murphy, NC but was able to retain the lead.

In the meantime Ogle, who was still running fifth, began to wage his low line charge. The machines of second thru fourth place runners Johnny & Shawn Chastain (Murphy, NC) and Casey Roberts (Toccoa, GA) all began to wash up the track in the turns opening up the gate for Ogle and by lap thirty-five he was knocking on the back bumper of Kerr.

As the laps counted toward the finish, Kerr and Ogle encountered lapped traffic, Kerr elected to move to the high side of turn two to get by Chris Williams of Warne, NC but had to check up for another lapped car, Ronnie Payne of Murphy, NC allowing Ogle to slip underneath down the backstretch. The final caution waved just as the white flag was to be displayed for a struggling Anthony White of Clinton who spun on his own in turn one.

This would set up a green, white, checkered run to the finish and Ogle was able to hold off the last lap charge of Kerr to take his second straight win in as many nights (he won $3,000 at Wartburg Speedway Friday night) earning a total of $7,000 for the weekend and more importantly gained fifteen more points on Kerr toward the title chase in the process.

"My car was not running very well but I think it helped me to stay on the bottom" stated Ogle from a track-side interview. "The lapped cars helped me to get by Tommy. I was a little surprised that he decided to pass 'em on the outside and I just kept it low and got by. When me and Shawn (Chastain) got together earlier and I fell back to fifth I thought that's where I would finish but I really couldn't believe how everybody started washing up the track toward the end. It really opened the door for me and when Tommy moved up to pass the 73 car (Chris Williams) I just kept it on the bottom and was able to hold him off at the end."
