UFO Media MARS, Penn. (July 18) - Bart Hartman from Zanesville, Ohio cashed in big at the Red Miley 53 at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway on Saturday night. His victory in the UFo Race Championship Tour event earned him $5,300, and in addition to that, Hartman led 51 of the event's 53 laps, each lap worth $53. That made his total earnings for the event $8,003!
With 31 entries, three qualifying heats were run. Al Atallah was the winner of Heat 1, from second starting position. Lance Elson won Heat 2, also from second at the start. Hartman took the win in Heat 3, after starting fifth. Mike Johnson won the B-Main to set the starting field.
In the redraw for the top 12 positions for the Red Miley 53, John Flinner and Tommy Beck drew front row berths. At the drop of the green, a complete restart was required as third starting Tony Musolino spun in front of the field, collecting Dave Hess, Jr. Beck took the lead at the start, leading lap 1 over Flinner, Hartman, Alex Ferree, and Atallah. The next caution came at lap 2 for a stopped Mike Johnson. Hartman powered from third to the lead on this restart, over Flinner, 11th starting Steve Baker, Atallah, and Beck. Baker passed Flinner for second on lap 5, as Ferree took fifth from Beck. Flinner slowed to bring out the next caution on lap 7.
Hartman controlled the next restart, leading Atallah, Baker, Beck, and Keith Barbara, who raced forward from 16th starting position. Baker passed Atallah for second on lap 11, before the issue-filled lap 14 ground the proceedings to a halt. Three cautions waved on this lap, as track conditions deteriorated due to drivers racing off the inside edge of the surface. This kicked loose dirt and rocks from that area up into the racing groove, creating safety concerns. The race was stopped at this point, as water was added to the inside area to keep drivers from racing off the racing surface. Conditions improved after this action was taken.
It was still Hartman showing the way as racing resumed, over Atallah, Baker, Barbara, and sixth starting Brandon Burgoon. 15th starting Gregg Satterlee took fifth on lap 17, before a pair of cautions on laps 17 and 18. Baker regained second from Atallah on the lap 18 restart.
When the next caution appeared on lap 26, the race was stopped for a planned fuel stop. The running order at the break showed Hartman leading Baker, Atallah, Barbara, and Satterlee, with Burgoon, Jim Lepro, Lynn Geisler, Ben Miley, and Brandon Wearing filling the top ten.
The second half of the event would run much cleaner than the first half, with just a single incident slowing the pace. Unfortunately for second running Baker, this incident was for his mount, which lost the driveshaft on lap 36. Baker was the only driver that could hold pace with Hartman.
With his main competition gone, Bart Hartman raced away for his first UFo Championship Tour victory in his All Star Performance/Lucas Oil/Malta Doors and Windows/Urgent Cash, Cornett powered Rocket Chassis. Al Atallah was second, and with that finish he vaulted into the lead in the UFo Championship Tour point standings in his Todd's Auto Body/American Environmental Service/Dean's Auto Service Pro Power Rocket. Keith Barbara's drive from 16th to finish third was impressive in his Forbes Field Garage/Triangle Benefit Services/Potoka Trucking Lazer Chassis, powered by a Domhoff Racing Engine. Gregg Satterlee's fourth place finish was equally impressive, as the shared row 8 on the starting grid with Barbara. Satterlee's run from 15th to fourth was aboard his Satterlee Petroleum Distributors/East American Motorsports Custom powered Rocket. Brandon Burgoon took fifth in his Allegheny Metal Finishing/AFCO Race Products/Three Rivers Scrap Metal Malcuit powered Rocket. Lynn Geisler, Tommy Beck from the tail on lap 26, Ben Miley, Jim Lepro, and Jim Stephans rounded out the top ten.
This was the first of five consecutive weekends where the UFo Race Championship Tour has events scheduled. Next up for the Tour is Saturday, July 25, at the Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne, WV.
