UFo Media SARVER, Penn. (August 7) - The UFo Race Championship landed at Lernerville Speedway on Friday night for the running of the Lunarville 33, with Alex Ferree from Saxonburg, PA topping the field. Ferree passed Boom Briggs for the lead on lap 17, as the defending Series champion notched his first UFo Series win.
A field of 33 cars ran four qualifying heats. Gregg Satterlee took the win in Heat 1, from outside the front row. Rob Blair won Heat 2, as he also started second. Heat 3 went to Russell King from fourth starting position. John Flinner won Heat 4, as he also started second. The B-Main rounded out the starting field, won by Davey Murdick, and the 24-car starting field was set.
The top three finishers from each heat race drew for the top 12 Feature starting positions. Boom Briggs and Russell King drew the front row positions in the redraw, and they would lead the field to the green flag. Briggs took the lead at the start over King, Gregg Satterlee, Jared Miley, and Alex Ferree. Sixth running John Garvin spun to force the event's first caution period on lap 1. Briggs continued to lead on the restart, with Satterlee moving to second on lap 2. They were three wide for third, with King finally claiming third the next time by. Ferree passed King for third on lap 5, as the top three raced closely for the lead. The next yellow appeared with 9 complete for a tangle in turn four.
Briggs again controlled the double file restart, with eighth starting Chub Frank entering the top five by taking fourth. Ferree passed Satterlee for second on lap 11, and closed on Briggs before a lap 13 caution period. The restart saw Briggs holding off a side-by-side battle for second with Satterlee inside and Ferree outside, before lap 16 saw the yellow again. The restart saw Ferree again go to the outside, this time he cleared Briggs off of turn four to take the lead at the halfway mark on lap 17, with Frank and Rob Blair filling the top five. The fifth caution period of the race came with 18 complete, setting up another double file restart.
Though his lead taking move was on the outside, Ferree chose the inside lane for the restart. It worked in his favor, as he advanced back into the lead. The battle was now on for second, as Satterlee passed Briggs for the spot on lap 20. Lap 21 was the final caution period of the race, for UFo Series point leader John Mollick who slowed on the front stretch, retiring from competition. Ferree controlled the restart again from the inside lane, with Briggs regaining second. 17th starting Davey Murdick had a great restart to take third, over Frank and Blair. Satterlee joined Frank and Blair in the hotly contested battle for fourth, which became the battle for third as the trio overcame Murdick, dropping him to sixth. Briggs stayed within a few car lengths of Ferree, but never posed a serious challenge as Ferree won the race by 0.639 seconds. Behind Briggs in second, Frank won the battle for third over Blair and Satterlee as they exchanged positions several times. Murdick was sixth, as Matt Lux, King, Mike Knight, and Keith Barabara completed the top ten.
Defending Series champion Alex Ferree took over the point lead with his first Series victory. John Mollick fell to second after dropping out of the feature, as he is now 13 points behind Ferree. Keith Barbara is third in the points, six behind Mollick and 19 out of the lead. Jared Miley is fourth in points, with John Flinner fifth. Mike Basich, Gregg Satterlee, Lynn Geisler, Mike Johnson, and Al Atallah round out the top ten.
